I have an AWD 91 Legacy Turbo GT (EJ22T) automatic and the Tranny died 2 years ago. It's been really hard to find a donor since these cars are super rare. Tons of non turbo's but hard to find one for mine.

I initially thought the the torque converter and the flex plate (the bolts on the flex plate were sheared off!) was the culprit and got that rebuilt and got new flex plates and bolts...but no luck. I was safe to assume now that the transmission was in fact the problem. Apparantly it would cost a lot of money to rebuild the tranny. The motor still runs strong.

I'm torn on what to do...the AWD Legacy GT's are such a rare breed. If I don't get it fixed, I'm thinking of parting out the motor. Anyone have a spare transmission lying around? Are there other compatible Subaru transmissions for this car?

The first gen turbo legacies don't have the GT designation (assuming we're both talking about the US models)

Anyway, if you are in the US, you can use an AT from a 92-94 non-turbo legacy. They have the same 3.900 final drive ratio, and should more or less drop in without any issues.

Other auto tranny's will bolt in, but you need to make sure the rear end matches. There's a ton of info about this all over the place if you do some searching.

An auto out of an NA car won't be as beefy. I'll quote my friend, an auto tranny expert:

The turbo Trannys are built to a higher spec. than N/A.
They have extra clutches in the Forward, High, and Transfer(4wd) clutch packs
and The Servo Piston For the 2nd-4th band has a larger apply area for more force on the band. and there are some small differences in the Valve body calibration also. And The N/A Torque Converter is a smaller diameter and requires a different flexplate.
