adding STI 6 speed to the old legacys

i did find the nice read about the guy that swapped a sti 6 speed into his legacy turbo, but i still ended up with a couple questions that went unanswered.
1. the sti trannys required the "male" type of axles but they talk of just using legacy automatic axles. are the auto axle like the manual axles being the "female" type or do they share the same "male" style as the sti.
and if they aren't the "male" type, how do you get the axles to work with the sti tranny.
2. what clutch/flywheel set up do you use? do you have to use the sti or can you use a wrx or even the legacy turbo set up? and then use the corresponding starter because i think the sti one was bigger flywheel.
i know i had more questions, but i have spaced on them right now.
i'll add if i remember.
