higher amp. alternator?

so my alternator took a crap today and left me strandedish... i'll be replacing it on monday wen i go back to work, i love discounts :D

i would like to get a higher amperage alternator though, just to keep me happy.

first of all how many amps is the stock turbo leg (its a 1992 as says the sig.) alternator rated at?

i'm running a sound system, performance lights, alcohol injection, high powered coil, and some other goodies so the more juice the better because i'm sure the list will grow even bigger in the near future.

are there any alternators from a wrx or sti that are straight fit? plug, bracket, size etc.? are they even any more powerful?

i'm sure someone has to have done this in the past.

i need the car up and running monday so i can't do an online order and wait for it to come in which is why i'm really hoping that there is and OEM with more juice that will fit right in.

thanks in advance

As an educated *guess*, I would look into the SVX alternator. It's the right age, so the form factor/plugs should match.

I don't know that it would put out any diiferent amperage being from a 6 cyl model. To my knowledge, no one makes an aftermarket high output alternator for the Suby market. You can contact companies like Ohio Generator, or Stinger for a custom one, but of course a high price tag will come with that too.

I was told by an auto-electric place that the case on suby alternators are so small that its tough to get significantly more output without having them burn down

Well.....there are HO alternators out there. I'm running one....160 amps

Here's the sheet from my old one

I've got a new one, basically same setup/rating from a company in the Dallas area. The one I have is for a WRX, however they do have first gen legacy ones. The connector style changed, however you can swap over to the newer style connector without too much of a problem.

My only gripe with HO alternators is that voltage drops when the engine RPM drops. normal alternators have a much flatter voltage curve. I was trying to combate this with a smaller alternator pulley, but somehow the aluminum pulley got boogered up.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure our alternators are rated around 70-75 amps. The WRX I believe is rated around 90-95 amps. I'd personally recommend just changing the alternator plug out and upgrading to a stock WRX alternator. You get a little more output from it, but don't necessarily have the drawbacks from a "true" HO alternator.
