I'm at work and haven't searched - I know the answer's out there but I thought I'd just ask real quick incase someone is feeling generous with their knowledge.

Last night I was replacing my front struts and when I pulled the passenger side out it loaded the control arm/axle/hub and seems to have pulled out the axle stub.

Having never experienced this, I'm a bit lost. I can rotate the shaft (gear selector is in Park) so it appears to have pulled it out past the splines, but it hasn't pee'd fluid all over the place yet.

So, how do I get it back in? Is there only one orientation that the splines line up, aka is it keyed? Is there just a circ-clip that holds it in? Would this circ-clip still be in place so all I have to do is beat it back in?

I'm thinking right now I need to drive out the cotter pin that holds the axle to the stub axle and then pull the CV joint back and off the stub so I can get access to the stub axle directly.

Any help you can provide would be emensly appreciated. I need to finish up that corner tonight so I can get the rears in.

I was figuring someone would answer this during the day. I'm heading home tonight to work on it and was hoping to have a little feedback.

Up until yesterday I would have told you that all Subaru transmissions use a spring circlip and you can pop it in. That is until I saw a picture of one with a ring that required disassembly of the trans.

Back on topic - you should be able to just pop it in. I don't think you'll need to remove the roll pin from the axle but if you cant get enough leverage it wouldnt hurt.

Ciper, thank you very much. I take it the shaft isn't keyed, just splined.

So I push it in until I can't rotate it anymore (as the tranny is in Park) and then I just push real hard on it?

I'll give it a shot.

Once the circlip is properly centered it shouldnt take much force to pop it in.

You were right on the money Ciper. I slowly rotated the axle around until it slid inwards towards the tranny and locked it in place, rotationally.

From there several hard shoves and it popped into place. It wasn't soft but it didn't neccissitate a hammer or removing the axle from the stub. I was able to grip the housing and push on it.

Thanks again for the help. I was kinda freaked a little, race this weekend and I prefere the axles in the tranny .
