Cutoutsurge on 93 Legacy L AWD

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and recently bought a 93 Legacy L (2.2L) AWD wagon in January. After about a month it started developing a quirk where it felt like the engine would lose power for a second and then the power would return with a "lurch". I replaced the alternator, but that didn't help. So I took it to my local Subaru dealer thinking it may be a fuel delivery issue (oxygen sensor). They told me they found "gapping" on the plugs and replaced the plugs & wires to the tune of $400. Of course when I picked up the car, it still had the same problem-so back to the dealer. They claimed they scoped the computer twice and got absolutely no codes. They suggested it might be a transmission issue, so I tookit down to the local transmission shop and they checked the transmission. They claimed the tranny was fine, but it needed a new clutch-another $900. Of course when I picked it up the gears shifted smoother, but it still had the cutout/surge problem. Since it has gottensteadily worse I talked to a mechanic freind who thought it might be the fuel pump-so I replaced that last week. It still didn't solve the problem!
I like the car other than this persistent problem, but I feel I can't keep "throwing money at it" replacing parts that are not the problem. If someone out there has any ideas please let me know!
Thanks!!
