I dunno if any of you guys like old American muscle, but a couple of the fellas here decided to go do some crusing in downtown Buffalo... and we brought some cameras.

Pauly, 1968 Camaro SS; Joey, 1969 Camaro Z/28; Mike, 1955 Chevy Bel Air; John, 1979 Camaro Z/28, and the lone Ford, myself, 1968 Mustang fastback.

dont see too many muscle cars there. I see quite a few pony cars and a classic

The '69 Z blew it's engine many many years ago - it now sports a cammed, aluminum head 472.

Buffman, you are the first person to comment on it, and correctly so. No muscle in the pics (well, minus the '69 Judge) but it's easier to type than "four ponies and a shoebox photoshoot thread"

And last but not least, yep, Mike grabbed a "Bullitt shot."

Always loved the '55's - Italian-American design fusion at its best. Friend of mine had a gold '79 Z28 just like that, but with T-tops. Garaged with low miles and bought it for $600. The owner had died and his mother kept it around for years and finally decided to sell it. That was a hell of a deal even then. You need to find a '68 Charger and play Bullit. The '55 is too nice to be Two Lane Blacktop (all yous kids out there need to see that movie if you haven't).

I've always liked muscle, but never really been into since high school about ten years ago.


If one of you gentlemen would be as kind to explain the difference between muscle and pony cars, I'd appreciate it.

A true muscle car was an intermediate (midsize, @ 112" wheelbase) 2-door body with a large V8 and RWD, built between 1964 and 1974. The car had to have "sporty pretentions, real or otherwise." The Pontiac GTO, Ford Fairlane 427, Dodge Charger R/T, Olds 442, Buick GSX and Chevy Chevelle SS are some examples.

However, fullsize cars, even with sporting creds, are NOT muscle cars. Too big, too heavy. Includes the Galaxie 500XL and the Impala SS.

Pony cars are "sportier", and follow a different fomula. They are smaller, (@ 108" wheelbase), lighter, and designed as more youthful vehicles, still retaining 2 doors, RWD and a V8. The Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Javelin, Barracuda/'Cuda, and Challenger are pony cars.

Also, there were sport compacts back then, too - cars like the Plymouth Duster, Dodge Demon, Ford Maverick, and Chevy Nova were popular alternatives to the bigger muscle cars, and were cheaper than flashy pony cars to insure.

The Pony car class was named after the Mustang, big surprise, so that's another way to think of which cars are in that class.

Always liked the compacts as well. They're finally being appreciated. The related book to my Dante series has a 1971 340 Demon in it. Too bad the pussies caved in to the religious nuts and dumped the "Demon" name.
