You can swap a 96' 2.2. into your 91'.
However, you will want to use the intake manifold from the 91' due to changes in sensors between 91'-96'.
Also, the 96' may have a single outlet exhaust manifold, i.e. the heads only have one hole for the exhuast opposed to the two holes per head that the 91' has. So you may have to either swap heads or swap exhaust manifolds.
There are some internal differences between the two motors - search for Phase 1 and Phase 2 EJ22E. I know there was a bit of discussion a couple years ago with me as the author as I have a 96' OBW with a 2.2 and wanted to know the differences.
