Brake pedal sometimes real low sometimes ok?

Ok, I' had this problem since I've changed a cv boot on my front drivers side. There was grease all over the brake.

The problem is that sometimes the brake pedal feels just normal and a second later it goes all the way down to the floor.

But it doesn't affect the brakes efficiency.
It just scares the hell out of me every time

There's no fluid leak from what I can see and the brake fluid level stays the same. How can I loose pressure in the pedal if there's no leak?

Any ideas?

Could it be a brake booster vacuum leak?

If that was the case, I should be a able to hear it, right?

Hmmm. My moms 95 honda civic DX had that problem. She called from her cell phone on her way to work saying she needed to get picked up because her brake pedal went all the way to the floor and the brakes didn't work. But when we went to go get her and I drove her car home the brakes worked fine all the way home. They've worked great ever since.

It was really weird. I've never heard of that happening before and couldn't figure out why it would do that. We bled the brakes and I think a few little bubbles came out and it was dirty but not much air at all.

If it was air in the lines I think it would be squishy but they lock up on dry pavement when you stomp on the pedal. Both front tires lock up.

Definitely suggest you do a brake bleed according to this. Could be your made some stuck sliders move better but only sometimes?

Thanks guys!

There's nothing wrong with the brake booster vacuum line, so I'm gonna bleed the brakes and check the slides.

But still I can't figure how air in the system would do that kind of on and off thing. I've had air in the brake system in the past and it doesn't fell like that.

Problem solved!

Changedthe master cylinder and no more pedal travel

Muffin soft pedal is gone!

Changed the brake booster for a single diaphragm booster.

Wow!

Pedal is so much firmer now!

I feel the brakes in my subie don't work the greatest, but maybe I'm just not used to them. Even on my 91 ranger (fresh brakes) I could get decent bite out of it enough to lock the tires up. I can put the subie pedal to the floor and it stops fairly well, but I would think I should be able to get the ABS to kick on with fresh brakes, fluid, and new stainless lines.

Unless the Subie ABS isn't that intrusive. Then again I'm used to driving my Roadmaster with hawk pads, and sticky meat on it.

Nothing leaks and the MC passes the simple check test for it.
