Ok, I forgot this. I'm not even sure that it can be done. I searched, did not come up with what i am looking for. How do you tell a 2.2t from the outside without taking the heads off?

If that's missing (those engine covers go missing pretty easily) you can always look for the existence of a turbo.

Also if there is a hood scoop it's a turbo.

I think he meant the block.

Crosshatching in the castings. Open deck blocks are smooth. Closed deck blocks have alot of checkerboard type of crosshatching in many places.

Thanks phyrra, I knew the crosshatching applied to the ej20, but I wasn't sure if the 2.2 was covered under that as well.

And no, nowhere does it say ej22t anywhere on the car.

Actually it does on the metal plate on the strut tower. Do a search for the old argument that people claimed we had Ej22G's in our cars. I finally got fed up with the bullshit and posted a picture of the strut tower. ;)

I thought he was asking how to ID the engine by just looking at the engine, like if it were a possible transplant or an assembled long block sans turbo gear. The engine itself doesn't say "EJ22T" on it, the stamping on top of the block just says "EJ22".

Assuming it's got the original heads on it, it would also have the turbo oil and coolant ports on the back of the right side head. Quick visual if the case is caked with grime and you can't see the crosshatching.
