how is the alternator tested on these cars ?
i have an amp meter , what are good readings and which are badd , what should i be checking to determine a faulty alternator ?

You need to take it somewhere to have it tested. Most auto parts stores can test them for free.
They need to be load tested. Unless you have an inductive pickup amp meter it'd be a little difficult to test for that. Even then I'd still probably take it to the auto parts store to double check.

an easy check is that is should be reading 13.5-14.5 ish volts when the car is running of course. you'll know its completely dead if it is higher than 14.5 volts (regulator) or you get the same reading with the car off.

And if it's intermittent correct voltage then it's luck of the draw.
