Rear Diff Question

Ok i have this rear diff that i bought from a member on another site.(rs25.com) He listed it as a VLSD w/2 axles. When i got the LSD and axles i looked at the axles and they where equal length. I asked him where was the axle that was longer than the other one. He didnt know, says he never installed it because he moved onto a different project! AKA he screwed me, because when he bought it he probably noticed it and was like i will just sell it. When i asked him more about it he said it was from a 96 JDM WRX. I have a friend that tells me this rear diff was in older turbo legacy's
91-93 and it's mechanical, not viscous. I went to auto zone and tryed to order one and got a front axle. So tracking down this part has been hard.

Any info would help

So my question would be:

Does a 96 jdm wrx and 91-93 usdm leg share the same lsd, and how can i tell if its mechanical or viscous?

I really need to track this damn part down so i can finally drive my car :x

Does it have the silver sticker on the back? Should say Viscous LSD and the gear ratio right on it if it's LSD. If it's not it just says the gear ratio.

I just found out that my 91 turbo has LSD in the rear which is funny because I had no idea and I almost bought one from a member here until he told me how high milage it was and was asking a little too much. Good thing I didn't buy it.

Take off the rear cover and look at it. That way you can see exactly what's inside.

Are you asking about the stub axles that come out of the diff, or the half shafts that go from the diff to the hubs?

There is no sticker on the LSD telling what it is.

I am ask about the part that goes onto the diff

The diff is mounted dead center on the car... why would one axle be longer than the other?

Left and right axles are different lengths.

Don't think so, I bought two axles and they are just labelled front not left or right. They were exactly the same length as well. Don't see how the rear axles are different size, I would need to measure them.

FSM 3-4 [S0A1] states that right-hand drive shaft is 10mm longer than left-hand drive shaft. If you compare them side by side this is apparent.

OK, I just learned something today

Sorta defies logic, but whatever... thanks for the info!

They are different. Since the pinion of the rear diff lies in the center of the car, the crown side of the diff is narrow, making one driveshaft SHORTER. My mistake. Sorry.

I pulled a 3.90 VLSD out of a 1991 t-Leg and one of the input shafts was longer than the other by far. One was short and the other had an extra piece approx. 1/2 inch long . Is this longer rear input exclusive to the 3.90 VLSD or is this shaft length difference the same on the 93 t-Leg as well. Im gonna swap the VLSD into my 93 SS ill post any good things / issues after the attempt.
