NEED HELP from the pro's. Having wierd problems

Post by Mattheww044 »

hey guys ive got a 92ss 5speed. 130k miles. i know that there is an oil leak behind the turbo im looking to get fixed asap

the problems:
trouble starting sometimes
really really boggy (very slow til turbo kicks in :D)
seems like its not getting the right amount of gas or something
revs really high (2k) or really low (500) sometimes
gas mileage is rediculously poor

what weve tried:
fuel filter was somewhat clogged- replaced
spark plugs were pretty bad-replaced
Put back in my turbo silencer(we did my coffee cup mod poorly), and that helped alot, as in it doesnt have this problem nearly as much anymore (guessing because there were leaks in out jb stick.

ive already put too much money into it to not know what the problem is at least so i can do it myself so i figured id ask you guys... anything helps
thanks

have you carefully checked for vacuum leaks especially the smaller lines for the turbo.

if the turbo is leaking oil it will go pretty quickly

i think it's time for a td04 swap.

on the turbo, there's an oil feed line i belive on top, take it off and check for anything clogging it and also check the copper washer.

replace the washer and be sure to torque the bolt properly.

my other thought would be your wastegate improperly functioning from being stuck or a vacuum leak to it.
could also be the boost solenoid.

do you have a boost gauge?

Have you replaced the O2 sensor since you bought the car? I had a few of the same problems, a new O2 sensor fixed them all.

You're not getting it. A bad O2 sensor will cause crappy gas mileage and if it's bad enough the ECU will go off of a map built into it for such a case. It over-fuels to prevent knock which can cause bogging and a rough idle.

Also, have you tried pulling your ECU codes? Sometimes your ECU will detect a problem, but it doesn't always throw a check engine light.

Ok. Find out what code it's throwing then. That will most likely be the problem.

ok guys this is where i need help. These are the codes im reading
11= crank angle sensor
22= knock sensor
23 airflow sensor
24 air control valve
31 throttle position sensor
32 oxygen sensor
33 vehicle speed sensor
45 atmospheric sensor
49 airflow sensor

OK, so considering the budget im on (maybe a couple hundred), what should i look at getting done first? i can probably do most of it myself with help from friends so which of those would be the smartest to buy first and get fixed?

Ha, that's quite a list! I'd clear those codes then go for a drive and recheck what is there. I suspect that some of those must be old codes. Either that or your ecu is dying.

If they don't clear, the ones you should fix first are: 22 Knock Sensor, 32 Oxygen Sensor and 49 Airflow Sensor.

Most likely, the other codes are a result of the 3 I listed.

So buy a new oxygen sensor and a new knock sensor. That will cost you around $200. Then get some MAF cleaner from your local auto parts store (~$6) and clean your MAF with it. Then clear the codes and see if anything else pops back up.

I had like 5 codes on my car when I bought it .
I changed the knock sensor & the CEL went away...

Look @ it & see if it is cracked, if it is CAREFULLY (do not break the coolant tank or knock sensor cable from the engine harness) change it.

And if you don't feel comfortable doing it, find a reputable SUBARU shop near you to do it. Don't just take it to Precision Tune or something.

I got mine from the dealer and it was only $100, because I got one for an N/A Legacy. The O2 sensor for an SS is about $165.

The only difference between the two O2 sensors is that the N/A O2 sensor has a longer wire than the SS sensor. So somehow the Subaru dealer has justified that the O2 sensor with the shorter wire should cost more...? Hahaha.

Get the N/A sensor and then just zip tie the extra wire out of the way so it doesn't rest on your down pipe.

ok guys, now so far i have: checked the codes, reset it, then changed the MAF, as well as the 02 sensor(actually from an NA legacy), but im still pulling all 9 codes.... does that mean new ECU + Remap?
