EJ20G heads + ej22e block=?

I know folks always put EJ20G heads on a ej22t block for a DOHC 2.2 hybird, but the CR is really low with that set-up - Low 7's:1.

I just parted out a EJ20G & have a complete DOHC conversion + a complete EJ20G intake lying around right next to a complete ej22e shortblock.

I was wondering how the EJ20G head / ej22e block combo will work.
I think CR should be about 8.5-8.8:1 using ej22t Head-gaskets.
Rods & crank are the same as a ej22t (or any other non-2.5l EJ motor) & the pistons are probably just as strong/weak as EJ20G pistons so I think the set-up should work well for a motor that will max out @ about 15psi of boost from a small turbo (16Gish)

If anyone has experience with the performance of this set-up let me know.

Are the ej22e block closed deck also?

I think with a proper tune, that should make a great combo. As a *guess* I would say 280~300 crank HP is possible.

The ej22e is open deck just like the EJ20G block is.

I think is will be a really nice motor as well.
I'm actually very happy with a EJ20G in my SS & was just thinking about a cheap build to learn more about these motors on.

It may go in the wife's Impreza, or in the SS - ?

If it goes on the wife's car I'll probably run actuator pressure on a ported TD04 into a STi EJ20G slanty top mount, exhaling out through a 3" downpipe connected to either a WRX/STi exhaust or a 3" catback I have in the garage (exhaust must be quiet on this car).
I think this combo should be good for at least 210hp (crank) @ low actuator boost level of about 8psi (the GF8 WRX EJ20G is a 2.0 & makes 220PS @ a max of 10psi on the same turbo & heads)

If it goes on the SS it will run just like my EJ20G is currently running on the car now - 15-17psi on a Ported "standard" 16G fed by E/L headers, going into a FMIC, injected with Methanol, & exhaling through a 3" TBE.

Are my Compression Ratio numbers for this set-up (EJ20G heads on a Phase I (94-95) ej22e 9.5:1 CR block with ej22t headgaskets) correct?

Yes,
You are correct. It will put you in a very boost friendly mid 8's for compression. I don't know why more people around here don't go this route. I've encouraged it for years. I have a local buddy who owns a shop called Suba Performance. This was his set (well he used DOHC Ej25 heads) on his 2000 Impreza from roughly 2002-2005. He first got me interested in this set up.

He ran it with a custom TEC turbo about the size of an 18G that was putting out 1 bar of boost on a daily basis. He used to turn it up to 1.2 or 1.3 bar for nights at the drag strip. That thing was a beast. It finally blew up when he decided to start daily driving it at 1.2 bar and just beat it to see what it could take. He deliberately removed his water injection to further abuse it. After a couple of months it gave up the ghost and he put an Ej205 swap in his car.

A couple of years back I approached Quirt Crawford about this formula and what he thought it could take in stock form. He told me that back in his sandrail days before the WRX came to the states he used to do this build. He told me that 300-325 at the crank would be fine on it as long as you had enough fuel and tuned it right, keeping the EGT's in check and making sure it didn't detonate. Beyond that, it's got the same liabilities that the Ej22T does, specifically rods that just can't take much more than that long term.

Cool!

I'm gonna take another look @ the ej22e's bores when I hit my garage today, I may just do a little rebuild on it if they do not look perfect.
If I do a rebuild the block will get a fresh hone, rings, bearings, seals, ej22t oil & water pumps, & a set of eagle rods if it is gonna go in the SS.

Would that be the composite head gaskets then? I'm doing the same with WRX heads.

I was thinking the Cometic MLS ej22t gaskets myself.

I was searching for this, because I was thinking of a way to get better low-end from my ej20g in the future without having my old 22t built with new pistons. Its good to know I can throw a run of the mill 22e sb in there if the time comes and keep compression where it would be spending $$$$ on high-compression Wisecos for the 22t block.

If my block goes I'm gonna see just how cheaply I can throw together an ej22e. I bet it would be perfect for this td05-18g. Get my low end back that I'm lacking.

I'm building a similar hybrid right now, 93 EJ22e shortblock, 96 EJ25D HLA heads, EJ20h cams.

ive got a 22e/253 combo in my impreza. made 220whp on 8psi of boost. been running for 2 years now.

Just curious, was this with stock 22t ecu? what about injector size and which head gaskets did you use?

I'd still like to try this. Need a good condition ej22.

It's my only option right now. I don't have the grand to drop into my 22t at the moment.

Mikey, what did you do with the uppipe, I remember people saying the factory uppipe won't clear the 2.5 SOHC head?
