Ej22 cranks.. all the same?

Im in the process of rebuilding my ej22t that died due to oil starvation (oil pump failed). It ate up the #2 rod bearing, rod and crankshaft.

I picked up a crank from a member of this forum several weeks back and finally got around to assembling the bottom end today, only to find that when cyl #1 is on BDC the crank is actually hitting the piston and stops rotating. It seems my original crank may have been machined to clear the piston whereas this one has not. What could this crankshaft possible came out of? all my rods are facing the correct direction and the pistons are in their original locations, along wrist pins and even the circlips. Im a little bit puzzled right now lol.

Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thats bizarre.

Do you still have your original crank for comparison?

Yeah no kidding, ive built 10+ engines and this is the strangest thing i've encountered. None of the other pistons have clearance issues. The area that is making contact with the piston is the outside of the cranshaft counterweight.

Is the crankshaft bent? I've heard of that happening in other cars, but I'm new to Subaru.

how about the Rod being bent? Im sure you checked it all but you never know.

that's very possible too. It's also possible that something got overheated and warped a bit out of shape. The engine was starved for oil, so it's possible something got WAY too hot.

Any chance you ended up with a Phase I EJ25 crank?

Ive been so busy i haven't had time to pull the block back apart (these wrist pins are a PITA!) but i will definitely keep this thread updated once i find some resolution.

I tried rebuilding an ej22t that was starved of oil as well.It got really hot but figured it would be an ok seasoned block.Long story short the block had many unacceptable problems. When aluminum gets hot enough it starts to move, and doesnt always come back.Though i must say your problem sounds more crank or con rod related.

I finally got the shortblock re-assembled and rotating properly. Maybe i will have the car running by this weekend!

What ended up being the problem?

Somehow the rod on #1 had gotten a twist in it, and my new crankshaft was machined differently on the counterbalances to where it actually hit.

I've finally got the engine in the car, I may get to start it today!

Okay the engine is in, trying to figure out a no-start condition.

Ive got the 3 plugs for the main harness plugged in by the battery, and also the 3 plugs by the pitch mount plugged in, and the body ground cable by the starter is good. I jumped the black connector by the steering column and the CEL just flashes constantly, never ending. Does this mean there are no codes stored?

Thanks!

Correct. That's supposed to be the "All Clear" sign.

Does it crank but just not turn over or what? Have you checked to make sure you're getting spark and fuel?

Yeah, i didn't realize there were two timing marks on the belt pulley and i think i used the wrong mark. Ive gotta bring my breaker bar & chain wrench home tomorrow and yank off the crank pulley to see though.

Haha I've made that mistake before, too.
