I need to learn if I can temporarally swap out a standard
EJ22 inplace of a turbo and get it passes Cali smog?
I have looked everywhere for a JDM longblock to no
avail. This would be my first turbo car. Also, can I put
in a later motor from an outback like a 2.5? Thanks

why does your motor not pass the way it is? i have a few ideas for you, if you want to swap in another motor in the mean time.

Most smog stations will cross reference the VIN with the intended motor. Then again, many won't. Some won't care as long as everything is hooked up and looks stock.
A poor running motor, either turbo or N/A will not pass.
If you currently have a turbo and just need a rebuild or something.....Get a N/A shortblock and install that under all the stock turbo heads and accesories. At stock boost levels it will be fine.

you could just get a NA ecu, drop in a NA EJ22, and then switch the cam and crank sensors. and it should run pretty good, at least well enough to pass emissions. surprisingly its actually a really cheap way of getting around your problem
Thats great news
