Ok boys and girls. My brother just bought a 1991 subaru turbo sport
sedan withwhat appears to be burned out transfer case clutches. Can
these things be replaced with the trans in the car or does the whole
thing need to be replaced. You don't even want to know what a dealer
wants for a new transmission except that its more than the price of
the car. The car actually runs fine as a 2wd but is certainly
traction limited. Any good advice on....

good used units :-)
good place to have one rebuilt (I am in NH) :-|
Easy to potentially fix myself? ;-o
I am in deep poo :-(

Thanks as always.

I believe that the awd in the automatic transmissions is handled
internally in the transmission by an electronically actuated clutch
pack similar to the other clutch groups in the automatic. The
difference is that the transfer case pack has variable pressure
control so that it can slip and vary the torque split. It would
appear that these are worn out.
