Well, I just registered to the forum today. I have been scanning the different threads on it though for a couple weeks now. I just bought my first 91 Turbo Legacy Sedan. I will be swapping the EJ22T and drive train minus the tranny into my 92 Legacy Wagon. The new Turbo Leg that i bought is AUTO But i had to buy the thing cuz the price was right... Anyways, I had a few questions regarding the interchangeability between the two and some of the specs regarding the components. First Question...

1. Is the Manual Transmission found on a 92 Subaru Legacy N/A have a different gear set? Or is it just the Differentials that are different between the turbo model and N/A Models?

2. Are all turbo legacies equipped with LSD's in the rear?

3. Will the center diff of the auto tranny found in the turbo leg fit a manual N/A 5spd from my 92 Legacy?

4. Is the auto Drive Shaft from front to rear different then that of a 5spd one?

5. Are the CV Axles different on auto tranny's then that of a 5spd? Front and back?

1. Gear ratio is different, as is the rest of the transmission.

2. No, only the 91 MY got the rear VLSD

3. The auto trans does not have a center differential

4. Yes the rear drive shaft is different between the auto & manual trans

5. CV axles are interchangable between MT & AT


Please do try and search for any additional information. There is A LOT of information on the board. Additionally, I'd suggest looking at my 5spd & AWD conversion write up. It should help provide some more details as to what's involved with the swap. The link is in the drivetrain sticky thread.

Is the wagon awd or fwd?

Hey thanks for the help Josh. I have taken a look at your swap write up before, which is awesome! Great Job! Unfortunately since I'm doing the reverse swap (sort of) EJ22T into a 5spd AWD drive trained Wagon, I didn't find MANY answers in there to my particular situation... I was under the impression that the 91 Turbo Legacy I picked up had a LSD in the rear. But i guess it doesn't since only the 5spd SS's were equipped with the LSD, is that correct? I'm also quite sure I'll need to hunt down a 5spd Turbo Legacy ECU to complete the puzzle, right? Now all i need to know is if i also need a 5spd EJ22T Wire Harness for the conversion...

Soo... Since if i remember correctly the final drive on the diff's on a N/A 92 Legacy are 4.111, Could i Use the rear diff from a 4eat 2004 WRX ? That's also 4.111 isn't it?

I think it would make the car funner to drive with the shorter ratio'd N/A tranny for the time being before i make any real power... For the time being i was first going to see how the EJ22t goes with a ported VF11, Ported SOHC 16v Heads for the time being, Ported Cast Exhaust Manifolds, Nice turbo back exhaust, nicer UP Pipe, Better, bridging pipe between L and R banks, And a Cold Air Intake.
Then, after i have some fun with that I will try out a ported TD04, FMIC, 440cc Injectors, WRX Fuel Pump, Revtronics Chip, Jecs MAF, (I have all expect the end tanks welded up to the FMIC core and the piping ill need and the chip... ) which will only hold me over for enough time to gather what i need to build a Fully built bottom end, dohc heads, ported, cammed, bigger valves, hd springs yadda, yadda and ohh maybe a GT35R Ill then worry about wrx brakes, maybe STi Drivetrain and it shall be the sleeper from hell! But in the mean time i will be using the search function a ton so I don't ask anymore annoying noob questions!

When you swap the wrx tranny do you have to use the WRX cv's or can you get away with using the SS cv's? How about the drive shaft? And I'd love to come poke my nose around for a bit. BUT only for a few min, as i know if i had someone pokin' around at my shop while I'm trying to do something id go crazy! Let me know when you guys start your project... You are also welcome to stop by my shop and see what I do there... I do alot of head work, porting anything that is worth or can be ported! And fabrication.

There is also tons of Turbo conversion info to be had in the Engine section. It's been done a few times and does not require a harness swap.

Why swap the wagon? If the SS is clean keep it together. The turbo conversion is so easy that there is no need to tear down yet another SS as a donor.

Your '91 SS has a LSD, but you can't use it with anything but a SS (or STI) transmission because it doesn't match the ratio in most other Subaru 5 speeds.

All SS ECUs are the same, manual or auto. The difference is one pin in the harness.

There are too many wrecked cars out there from peeps who did power before suspension and brakes. Please reconsider.

That's great news regarding the ECU and Harness being pretty much identical! That makes me happy! The reasons for swapping the goods into the wagon are as follows... Finding a LSD rear end (which i already did, from 4eat 2004 WRX) is much easier then trying to find a Turbo Legacy 5spd Manual transmission, wouldn't you say so? Not to mention far more cost effective... Swapping the turbo engine and suspension from the SS, I'm assuming won't be as big of a PITA as messing with the pedal cluster, gauge cluster and so on... As well as the fact that the Wagon doesn't have ABS which i would just plan on removing from the SS... Next, removing the entire drive trains and suspension of the SS will allow me to sandblast each component, replace every bushing/ball joint that needs it, and perhaps powdercoat or just paint all the components that get blasted, i.e. (subframes, control arms, differential, diff supports, hubs and so on) Another reason is for practicality. I already have a 4 door sedan that will be super fun when its completed.
Next reason... Ready? SLEEEEEPER STATUS!! When that guy in a mustang GT has to tell his buddy he got roasted from a green light by a 92 Rusted Legacy Wagon... First, no wagon came in a manual that's EJ22T equipped right? Next, the SS would live on just in the Wagon form... I'm not sure what exactly I'll do with the 91 Legacy SS... Maybe swap everything from the Wagon into the sedan and turn it into a totally gutted, super light, NA snow rally machine. And do the same process to the drive train and suspension while its out. Maybe I will sell it as a rolling chassis to someone who might be interested. It is totally straight, clean.

Now lastly, Don't get me wrong... I know how to build a fast, safe, fun car... I surely would have basics like some fat sways front and back put on the wagon. I know the downsides to the original suspension design and what aids it. All I'm saying is... Till i make like 500 whp... The STi drivetrain and bigger brakes, and coilovers and all other goodies simply won't be needed on a "lil" TDO4 setup. Don't you think so? I would be really surprised if i could break 250whp with the TD04 setup... The brakes as of right now are BRAND NEW, rotors, pads, rebuilt calipers... Have fresh struts, MAYBE stiffer lowering springs and some decently thicker stabilizer bars...
Anyways let me know what you think... I'm heading out to the shop now so I'll get some pics for you guys...
