NonAirbag wheel???

I have always disliked bulky factory wheels, and was going to replace my stock one with an aftermarket three spoke generic wheel. I don't mind not having an airbag, but was wondering if it was safe to have a nonSRS wheel in a car meant to have one?? For some reason I remember hearing about some one getting a ticket for having one or something. Thanks

Depends on jurisdiction, but I wouldn't worry about it as the same car was originally sold without the air bag. Who's going to know? I have an aftermarket on mine, but it never had a bag originally. The only time I'd worry is with resale, depending on the year, as bags were federally mandated. Again, though, it's not likely to be a problem.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if the seat belts or something where different in the cars that didn't come with them. Didn't think they would be.

Related info:

I'm not recommending the following, but if you take your instrument cluster out, you can kind of snap it apart and stick a small piece of duct tape over the back of the cutout for the airbag warning light. That will make the warning light invisible and it's much, much easier than digging out the bulb for the light. Upon casual inspection, the car will appear to be a factory non-SRS car.

Also, I believe it was only the 1992 models that had airbags as an option -- all 93-94 models had them.

I'd consider swapping to a newer year steering wheel. My friend got a ticket for putting a Nardi in his STi, though to be fair he does attract a lot of attention. IMO stock wheels look better though anyway. You could do what I did and get one with the airbag deployed and just cover it with something.
