I need a turbo ASAP!

I am getting my motor back sometime this week from the machinest. I had it rebuilt with all OEM internals, 4 new factory pistons old connecting rods and some P&P was done to the heads as well. Anyway, I need to buy a turbo. I plan to put a FMIC in so I want the biggest turbo that I can "fit" in there. Can anyone make a recommendation? When I say fit I mean in place of the stock one without any modifications to the up/down pipes. I also need to know where to buy one, so a manufacturer or company name would be nice too.

Thanks guys,
Mike

I have the TD05 that is in the parts shed I realize that the price that I am asking is a little higher than most but feel that this turbo is in very good condition. It came from AUS. and the company that sold it to me said that it only had 9,000 miles on it. For other turbo's you could contact the company that I work with in development and sale of my electronics and that is pdmturbos.com or call him at 303-287-8889 he has some turbo's in stock and can get them pretty quick. Hope this info helps, e-mail me if I can help.

TD05 16G. But Also possibly the massive TD06-20G, it'll bolt up to the WRX Up/down pipes. And I hear that the legacy turbo ones are virtually identical. But this will put you above the 300hp rated limit of stock OE internals. That mother is rated for~ 450 hp.

ok, thank you very much, I will look into both of these options. by the way, I thought we could get close to 400hp on OE internals. I know for a fact that the conn. rods are forged and that the pistons "may" be hyperutechtic (spelling). I know that detination is an issue and I plan to do my best to overcome that. Mile, hi, you didn't say how much you wanted for the turbo. I may be interested but I usually like to buy things new. Thanks again and anymore info would be greatly apreciated.

TD05-16G=very nice
Yes, the rods are forged, as is the crank . . . however, the rods are thinner than your typical aftermarket con rods. Pistons are supposedly pressure cast, and though they're not forged, are the next best thing. Crank is forged as well. And don't forget about that nice closed-deck block
I was told that the stock internals can handle ~350 crank hp. Of course, this could increase with the right tuning. I'm in the process of trying to tune my car . . . got some monitoring equipment and I have a s-afc coming by the weekend. After a little more saving, I'd say it's time for larger 440cc injectors and then I can FINALLY take the car to TurboXS to get it tuned/dynoed . . . I know, I've been talkin about that forever
Since you're gonna be looking for higher numbers. The stock injectors are 380cc. I've been documenting fueling over the past couple of days. The injectors seem to be maxxed out at 1bar, however a/f ratios are still rich. Once you hit 1.3bar, however, the a/f ratios end up moving into the stoich area. You can see my results in my post "testing the limits of the stock fuel system". This OBD1 ecu is pretty darn adaptive, I must say!!

I was talking to a shop near me called Extreme Motorsports. They've been working on dsms for sometime now. I told them I had a TD05-16G and asked about putting in a 20G compressor wheel and balancing. I was told $450 OUT THE DOOR. Pretty good price if you ask me.
At that point, I think a custom front mount is in order. I'm still waiting to see what the hot summer months will do to my TMIC efficiency with that small-ass hoodscoop

What's your budget??? Since you're adding an intercooler you've got a ton of options. Plus if you don't mind replace your 90 degree elbow on the turbo inlet with a silcon elbow or something you can run any IHI VF series turbo.
Also you have to tell us what you want out of a turbo, quick spool and low/midrange or all top end drag racer style?
With the FMIC you will not get the spool up as a TMIC, but you can compensate with a quicker turbo.
How much boost do you plan/want to run and are you going to upgrade your fueling?
Thanks - Jon

Not necessarily. It also depends on the type of the intercooler. And with the small hoodscoop, there's not much flow to a TMIC. Check this out:
"I 'had' a v3 sti intercooler.. and with the RS bonnet scoop never got that much or enough air... over the weekend I installed a 700x300x75mm micks metalcraft front mount... with aluminium piping.. I can honestly say.. of all the stupid shit I've spent money on this would have to be the best bang for your buck I've seen... and heard !!
The piping was from a my00 wrx.. and fitted in with minimal hassle what so ever.. the car now drives like a million bucks. as stupid as it sounds my car is LESS laggy with the front mount than the stock top mount.. comes on boost earlier.. and harder.. and holds the same boost all the way to 7800rpm.."

Yes your intercooler will receive more air in the front, but you sacrafic throttle response. Only reason he improved is he went for the crappy flowing (of air through it) to an aftermarket (likely bar & plate) which will flow more air through it quickley.
When you had an RS scoop did you have the weather stripping/duct work that made the hood scoop air only possibly hit the intercooler? If not that is a very important step.
Plus one 5+ mph front end smack and your buying a new intercooler rather than a bumper beam & bumper cover. FMIC's aren't practical for the daily driver if you ask me.
Not worth it unless you're going all out IMHO.

Well, the guy (not me) had an Australian Liberty RS (not a USDM Impreza RS), that has the small hoodscoop like the turbo legacies. There's really not much air that comes into that scoop, which is also placed further back, which in design, was meant to cool the turbo, not a topmount intercooler. Ducting might help, but I think there will still be limitations in airflow regardless.
YOu're right, though. A front mount would be crushed in the event of a front end collision, but it would help with cooling . . . and if that happened, considering the car's 12 years old, I think the car would be totalled anyways

Fit an Impreza scoop and then you've got air flow and no worries about intercooler damage from even a gentle collison.

Since I'm gonn have to cut the hood for an Impreza scoop, I had another crazy idea that I posted in the Body, Chassis, and Interior forum . . . take a look!!

What's your budget???
Well, I dont have one really. At this time I own 4 cars. This is my project car. I plan to street race with it, so quick 1/4 mile is what I'm looking for. I will not be using this car as a daily driver. I am definately doing a FMIC which I also need to buy fairly soon. Basically I'm looking for a quick spooling "big assed" turbo. I'll deal with fuel and detonation problems when I get to them..... I'm shooting for 15 lbs. normal boost and 20 lbs max. I want at least 300hp but I'm going for 400. There is a guy here at work with a 390hp supercharged ford lightening. So I'm looking to spank his ass. How awesome would that be???
Well thanks for all the help.

Well with those goals... might as well order injectors now... your "quick spooling big ass turbo" will need them
If money is no object (as your goals would suggest) Might want to look at the APS turbo's from Cobb Those are probablly your best bet.
Good luck.

I'd go with a TD05-16G. It's a good base turbo to start with. It spools pretty quick, around 2800rpm in 1,2,3 and 3000rpm at 4,5 gear. It's also readily upgradeable if you want more. Right now I'm running 1bar (14.7psi), which is the absolute limit of the stock injectors.

I don't agree with the lag of a FMIC. The speed the air is traveling at under boost would make 4 or 5 feet of extra pipe no problem. I don't realy like TMIC, they are ok but I would not bother to make it fit and still worry about getting air to it

K, i believe that is true as well. although, lag can vary depending on what size piping you use. if you are dumb and use 2.5in or even 3in, then you will have more lag. but, if you use say 2.25in from the turbo->ic-->engine then it will be better.

Is a VF 34 too big? I plan on buying a new one tomorrow. I also plan to upgrade the fuel and do a FMIC and the other goodies to compensate. Is there any reason I SHOULDN'T go with a turbo this size???????

You won't hear any disagreement from me!!

A vf30 is very similar to the tdo5-16g in terms of flow and max power/ spool, etc.... the vf34 is just a faster spooling vf30. same turbo, but ball bearing and is supposed to spool about 3-500 rpms sooner.
it is a good turbo, and you could probably push out about 325 crank hp on a ej22t probably fairly easy.
