Head Gasket -- Phase I engines, or just Phase II?

As i am continuing to learn about the Legacy, I am intrigued by the 1997-99 GT, particularly with the avilable 5-speed. But i have read some things about the head gasket problems that these engines are known for.

If I understand it correctly, a 1997-1999(early 99) Phase I engine should not be affected as often by the known head gasket issues. The primarily affected engines seem to be Phase II.
Does this jive with the experience you guys have had with the legacy, or do the Phase I engines seem to have issues as well?
