Splitting The EJ22T Case Can't Remove The Last Little Bolt

I've just finished stripping my EJ22T to sell the case halves to another forum member. I've come across a problem. The factory service manual tells me there are 17 bolts. 6 long ones on one side, 2 long ones on the other side along with 9 short bolts on the same side. I removed all of these bolts and happened to notice an 18th bolt that is not mentioned or drawn in the diagrams of the FSM.

It definately appears to be holding the block together on the bottom of the inside of the engine. Problem is, I can't get it out. There's basically no room whatsoever to get a socket and ratchet on it and if you use an extension you can get somewhat on the head of the bolt but the extension has to be at such an angle that if you try to loosen the bolt it just strips it. I tried a box end wrench but there's not even enough room to get that on. I tried the open end and that just stripped it too.

What do I do? How do I get that damn bolt out?

Try a 10mm flare wrench
1/4 drive 10mm socket w/ short extension or swivel.

Do you have access to a lathe? Turn down a 10mm socket to fit.

I've always used an open-ended 10mm wrench.

You need to use a 1/4 drive socket, that monstrosity you have pictured has no chance of fitting a 1/4 will go right on.or if you dont want to buy $5 in tools you could clearance the block a little bit just behind the head of the bolt,or grind your wrench thinner.

Gonna grind the wrench. Or maybe stop by the auto parts place and buy another box end and grind it.

Thanks

Also, are the block halves seated back together? If they are split at all you are putting a lot more tension on the bolt.

Yeah I figured that. I grinded the wrench down and got the bolt out. Pushed the pistons out and removed the crank and rods. Block is now back together with all the bolts finger tight and it's wrapped in saranwrap in a box in my room ready to ship out monday. Well not quite ready because it doesn't fit in the box all the way so I have to buy a new box that's bigger.

I'm glad that's over with. Now I can clean out the garage and get ready to start on my swap.

And blackbart will finally get his block soon.

3/8 drive socket works GREAT. BUT....

You have to use a small 3/8 breaker bar....

I've only got 1/2" breaker bars. It would be nice to have a 3/8" breaker bar though. Do they make 1/2" to 3/8" adapters? I can never find them, only the other way around. A friend of mine told me it was because if you need to use a 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar on it, you shouldn't be using 3/8" sockets on it.

1/2 to 3/8 adapters can be found at Sears, autopart stores, hardware stores, etc. I've got em and use them often. The adapters can take a lot of abuse but don't try using them to break loose an axle nut or crankshaft bolt. You will probably end up shearing the 3/8 male end off.
