Turbo Upgrade for Me and Info for BBS

The LC BBS site have proven invaluable to my Subaru experience over the last few years.

I'd like to give something back, if possible, by offering up the following......

I plan on upgrading to a TD05 (from my '06 TD04) in the next couple of weeks, but since I'll already have it apart, I also want to test a JDM TD04 (not an -HL) and couple of VF11's I have lying/laying around.


I have access to RevScan datalogging software that can do THIS. I also have Vikash/VRG3's scan tool and cable.

And an Innovate LC-1 wideband.

The Revscan and LC-1 aren't connected together, but the LC-1 does its own data logging.

The car will have the 440 or 480cc injectors, JECS MAF, and the Revtronix stage 2 chip installed. I'm not sure I want go back to stock, but would consider it if there's enough interest in something specific, as changing out the fuel rails is PITA.

I know most of this been done on the site before, so there's plenty of relevant info already availalble here, but if anyone has any questions, please let me know.

I'll offer up my thoughts-

I think at this point the only real data missing would be dyno numbers.

Unless you're looking to chalk up the research to experience, I don't know how many questions are currently "unanswered" regarding any of the setups you're proposing.

TD04 vs. VF30: JDM V7 Subaru Impreza WRX STi. The VF30 is a thrust-bearing turbo that utilizes the P18 exhaust housing of a VF24 and the compressor housing sized between a VF23 and a VF22. Install was painless. Tight fit between 90 elbow and IM, but not as bad as others. Used the VF11's upper coolant pipe and the VF30's lower pipe - had to bend it a bit to fit. Also, tight fit where 90 elbow connects and the WG and Turbo vac lines connect.

TD04 vs. TD05H-18G (Zage brand turbo- yeah, I know, I know). Installed OK, but very tight on the stock oil lines and the 90 elbow against the IM.

EDIT: Turbo lasted all of 35 days, less than 500 miles. See below for pics!

As I didn't get much feedback, since most of this is covered, I've gone ahead and just installed the turbos. I found bad studs on both of my VF11s, so haven't put them in to test.

Here are some pics, FWIW:
TD04- I used the coolant and oil lines from my VF11. Very tight fit between the IAC plug and turbo's nipple. And I've obviously removed the stock PCV tubing - running to a catch-can. It connected to my '06 WRX IC just like the TD04L did.

TD05 is in and doesn't do much 'til 4K RPM...which isn't much fun w/an Auto. :(

I knew this was likely, but having no experience, didn't know it'd be this bad.

So, I'lll be looking @ going back to the TD04L, unless I come across away to spool quicker.

Yes...running the Stage2-TD04 v.2 chip.

Hmmm check for leaks, it should spool up a bit more quickly than that.

my dad's td05 sees boost on a flat surface in and around 3000rpm.

Same here .... full boost at ''around 3000rpm'' (11 psi) check for leaks or maybe your turbo is going ....

Thanks to all you smart Subie owners the TD05 is working well!

I believe it was mainly the Wastegate- there was some play in the WG, and since the stock one wasn't adjustable, I fabbed up a little something to use an extra TD04 actuator I have, which tightened it up.


I also had a loose PCV/catch-can hose.



MUCH Better....pulls harder and earlier....approx. 3200 RPM, which sounds about normal.

And it now feels much stronger from a standing start .

Nice! How are you likin' it so far? I'm using a VF39 (almost as big as a TD05) on the Revtronix Stage 2 chip and I LOVE it. Haha. So much more torque!

wt, I'd be very interested in your thoughts on the differences between the td04 and 05 in various driving situations. I know the td04 spools more quickly and the td05 has more top end but in situations like city driving where you want to speed up quickly and get into an opening in traffic, or which one handles a dead stop from the traffic control on-ramps to get up to 65 mph more easily, or which one handles a steep uphill interstate passing situation better. . . stuff like that.

A VF39 does ;)

Has the spool of a TD04, but a lot of top end like the TD05.

NOTE: I'm running very rich, as I'm waiting on a new Revtronix chip for my 480cc injectors; the chip I have now is calibrated for 440's.

I'll keep your questions in mind as I've only had it installed for 2 days.

My initial impression (even after I fixed the WG issue) is the same as most I've read on here: Slower initial spool; more top end.

BXSS stated his 0-60 times went up w/the TD05; the TD04 was quicker 'til he got to 75. I may try some runs w/my G-tech and then try the TD04L again....since my BOOST DROPissue is no more.....:-)

I also have an Autocross this weekend; I'll see how it does, as it'll be a good test of mostly low-end.

IMHO (but uneducated), I think the rare TD04-H-L may be the turbo of choice for us w/the 4EAT/Auto transmission.

Oh, don't tell me that-where the heck were you 2 months ago....I almost bought a VF39 instead of the TD05! :D

Only bad is the VF is not rebuildable (and has a propensity to get a crack @ the WG), but they're also 'cheap' on NASIOC.

EDIT: VF39 can be rebuilt (see posts @ at end of this thread - Deadbolt is dead, though) and the crack rarely matters.

Hahaha don't worry, you still have a pretty fast spool and a lot of top end. To be honest, the only thing that's really holding you back is the ability to down-shift into your power band.

Nice info!

I've been playing with my OBS-t & Little scoot lately...

I may do the above turbo line-up with a VF11, TD04 90*, TD04L JDM, IHI VF30, TD05-16G 90*, & TD06-20G.

The VF39 does NOT flow as much CFM as the TD05-16G, it is nice compromise between the 2 TD series turbos though.
A side by side comparison of the VF22 (bigger than VF39) & the TD05-16G showed me that the TD05 compressor was phhysically bigger than the IHIs & @ low 400 CFM of flow the IHI did not flow as much air as the TD05 - so I sold that sucker off.
