harness merging questions!!!!!

Ok, so I'm putting an EJ22T into my '94 impreza L. Today a fellow bbs member and I started tackling the wiring. We were trying to decide on the best way to do it. I have a chart that I think I got from another member, "n2x4" maybe? It states all the pin differences between the 1.8 ecu and the 2.2t ecu. We figured the best way to do this is to follow the chart and switch all the wires from the 1.8 over to the correct pins on the 2.2t ecu. Then add any wires for 2.2t specific sensors. Doing it this way would allow us to utilize the existing harness.

Does this make sense?!?!? This whole wiring thing is overwhelming!

That's what I did for the most part. I replied to your thread on rs25, but I'll do it here for ease of transition.

One problem you'll run into is the location of the Engine wire harness between the cars. The way the wires had to be routed were a major influence on how I did the swap.

If you were to use the EJ18 harness on the 22T, the engine plugs would be in direct way of the turbo.
If you use the EJ22T engine harness, you have to merge it into the 1.8 harness somehow. Also, since the EJ22T harness is on the far side of the engine, you have to extend some wires to mate to the 1.8 harness.

Very helpful info. Mostly the same as what I was doing, except you've got a few better ideas. The intermediate harness between the legacy and impreza engine plugs is a good idea. For the ignitor, can you use the impreza one? It looks to only have 5 pins in it, I don't even know what that thing does anyways. Also, for switching the wires over at the ecus, were you able to remove them from the connectors? I opened the little snap thing and then tried to pull the wires out but they don't want to come out.

Igniter works the same - I'm using the Impreza one on my car. If you look at the diagrams you'll see exactly what it does (car won't run without it!) But if you don't have the diagrams that could be a problem :lol: Let me know what you don't have and I'll try and hook you up with what I used from my swap...

The intermediate harness made life a lot easier for a few reasons:
*It broke down the wiring into stages which was easier to troubleshoot when problems crop up
*It reduced the amount of hacking required - Engine harness was left untoched as well as the stock Impreza body harness. I just had to chop up the legacy body harness (which you have to do anyway to get it out of the car) and chop the plugs off the impreza engine harness (which won't matter since the engine gets tossed).

I didn't remove any of the wires from the ECU connectors - I just cut the engine plugs off the impreza after the wires were labeled and soldiered in the ECU connectors from the Legacy.

They come out, but they're held in by a prong in the socket. Magicmike has a good explaination on how to get them out/fix busted connectors:

One other thing - when you splice the wires together - do it right! ALL my connections were soldiered, heatshrinked, Electrical taped, and then any group of wires NOT under the dash were loomed. I can almost guarantee that you will have to troubleshoot some weird problem during the swap - and the last thing you want to do is have to second guess your wire connections![/list]

Ok, I got the ignitor thing figured out. You're right it seems to be pretty important :)

My wiring is all finished except for 2 wires coming from the 12-pin engine connector, called "E2" in the FSM. A green/white wire, and a white/green wire. The FSM appears to neglect to inform as to what these wires are. I was thinking of just colour matching from the 1.8 connector, but I'd rather know what they are.

Any help is appreciated

Hmmm, G/W W/G? What pin location? (the 12 pin connector is B58):
B58.1 TPS (ground)
B58.2 TPS (signal)
B58.3 TPS (power supply)
B58.4 Crank angle sensor (+) T
B58.5 Crank angle sensor (-) T
B58.6 Crank angle sensor (shield) T
B58.7 TPS shield
B58.8 MAF sensor pin 5
B58.9 Park switch
B58.10 Neutral switch
B58.11 VSS
B58.12 Ignition switch

I mean one of the 3 connectors that attatches to the engine harness. Theres a round one and 2 square ones, one with 12 wires coming out of it. The g/w and w/g I don't have hooked up to anything. When removing them from the complete harness it looks like they went to something underneath the steering column.

Dur - I failed to see you said engine connectors in your first post, sorry about that!

I remember the two phantom wires from my swap. I believe they mapped out to the coolant and oil pressure sensors for the dash cluster (independent from the ECU coolant temp). Check those first and see if I'm right. Basically I made a checklist for the engine and went over each wire individually, the last two wires that didn't check out I knew were my mystery wires.

UPDATE:

car won't start!

The fuel pump wasn't working, so I wired in a switch for the relay, but when you put the key in the ON position it turns off, and vise versa. I think it probably has something to do with the self shutoff switch, because when I grounded the fuel pump relay by itself then it would stay on. So then I tried wiring the ignition relay to a switch, but it still won't work!!! I think the self shutoff control might be backwards or something.

I've only got a week left until I go back to school, I've gotta get this thing running. Please help!

You're at the hardest point of the swap, it's all wired in - now if it only ran! My suggestion is to troubleshoot what's holding you back - fuel, spark, or both.

Do you have spark (yank a plug and check)?
Do you have power to the injectors (they're fed constant 12v)?
If you have power, do they pulse (the ecu will switch ground to make them work)?

If you have none of those you're probably right about your relay not working correctly.

Double check your self shutoff and fuel pump wires - are they switched?

Double check the main relay - there are two "switches" that close in that relay. Both have to close for the car to start. If the self shutoff wire is wrong, only one of the "switches" will close.

Start there, just break down the issue as far as you can. Isolate it to one specific element if possible. Just remember all you need is fuel, air, and spark :wink:

That thread sounds like you had very similar problems. I'm gonna try the thing with the diode and see what happens. Thaks a lot for your help man! I think you're right about this being the hardest part of the swap.

okay I think all the realys are sorted out, but I'm not getting spark. I don't think that the impreza ignitor will work, it's missing the pin for the yellow wire that goes to the ECU pin labeled "ignition switch". I made a trip to the junkyard and found a couple n/a subies, and all of them are missing the yellow wire. I think the ignitor might be turbo specific.

In my experience it's not. I'm running the 95 Impreza ignitor on my car...

I'm not sure why you messed with the ignitor wiring. When I did my swap, I left all that alone. I didn't care how it interacted with the car, I just cared how it came back to the ECU. I only made changes to the harness at the ECU- Nowhere else.

I will agree that there's something wrong with either your coil or ignitor wiring.

I didn't mess with the ignitor wiring, I left it alone. But when I looked at the plug for the ignitor on the legacy harness it has 6 wires, the impreza one only has 5. I'm gonna try replacing this and hopefully it will help, cause everything else seems to be correct.
