Easier to install tranny with shifter or without shifter?

I just got the bolt and sleeve for my shifter and was wondering if I should bolt the shifter in or not.

What I'm really asking is, should I leave the shifter off and install it inside the car once the tranny is in? I thought I read on a thread that it's a bitch trying to get the bolt through the shifter because of limited room inside the car.

Install the shifter in the car. Install the trans in the car. Connect the linkages. Done. Ten minutes apart.

It's not that easy.

One of the shifter mounts attaches to the transmission, so you can't just install the shifter and bolt up the linkage later.

IMO, it would be better to put as much of the shifter together as possible now, and then just finish it when the trans is installed. It won't get in the way that much.

Yes, putting the forward part of the linkage together will be MUCH easier with the trans out of the car.

OK, now I'm confused. Which part do I put together before? I have the whole shift linkage connected and installed along with the shifter. Everything is together except I haven't gotten the shift ball into that plastic hole.

Its easier to install the rear mount into the car first.

What part is the rear mount? The bushing?

The bushing that mounts to the body. Where the shifter pivots on the rear. Its a bitch to get that in w/ the tranny in the car.

I see. I bought a kartboy bushing to replace that. I'll put that in before trying to put the tranny in.
