Basically. I know that EJ18s and early EJ22 NAs use the same pump.

In fact, the pump I rebuilt for my car is off the EJ18 motor I had.

Curious, how'd you come to the conclusion the oil pump is going out?

For the pump itself to go out, it would be pretty nasty. A Subaru oil pump will keep pumping until the gears ripped themselves apart.

puking oil when i rev it hard for a while. if i drive it casually no leaking.

however, i am now pretty sure the pump is fine but just needs some screws inside tightened up and loctited so that it stops pushing oil past the crank seal.

Greg,
That's probably got a 7mm pump on it. You can upgrade it to either a 9mm NA Ej25 pump or a 10mm Ej205 pump. All oil pumps are interchangeable. I run the 10mm on my 2.5RS.

Greg,
That is a very common issue with the ej engine the bolts/screws backing out on the rotor case/backing plate working there way loose due to vibrations & causing a leak from nowhere?

Great job ,you called it!
