Anybody know what the significance of the blinking "POWER" indicator
is. I think I remember reading somewhere that it is an indication of
a fault in one of the systems.

Well there is really two things it does. When you accelerate hard, it tell's you it is in "POWER" mode, it changes the shift points, and may do something else...not sure. I talked to a subie mechanic, he said, it just tells you that you're not driving fuel efficiently...

The second purpose is as a diagnostic light for the auto tranny computer. Someone posted the codes and how to get the tranny to do the diag mode on the USMB. I think I may have it. I'd have to look.

I just had that light flashing today when i started my car. I had
left my car parked in an icy lot for a couple of weeks. It stopped
flashing a few seconds after all the other idiot-lights went out,
which it doesn't usually do.

When i tried to back out of the spot, the wheels were spinning.
Surprised, I got out and looked at my tires....3 tires were dry, and
only the front right was wet. No matter which gear i put it into, the
rear wheels never moved, just the front right. What does this mean?
Is my AWD shot?

SHIT! I know I have the transmission codes somewhere. I know I saved them from the USMB. I just don't know where. I will do some searching through my files and see if I can find them. If I can I'll post them. If anyone else has them....I'd like to know too.

I'm not sure what a code 16 on engine start would be... the list I have just goes to 15. It could be two
codes together... is it a steady blinking? Maybe if you put it into diag mode, it will give you more data.

I pulled this off the The Subaru SVX FAQ (home.mgfairfax.rr.com/svx/faq/index.htm) so I don't know how much this will apply. I don't know if it will work on a(ny) Legacy and I havn't had a chance to try it on my car.

Diagnostics

The "Power" light indicates transmission codes. The following self diagnosis will show any fault codes for the transmission.

To perform the self diag test for EXISTING problems
1) Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
2) Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
3) Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
4) Turn ignition switch OFF.
5) Move selector lever to D and turn manual switch ON.
6) Turn ignition switch ON.
7) Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch OFF.
Move selector level to "2" and turn manual switch ON.
9) Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch OFF.
10) Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
11) Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal.

Ryan, thanks for the codes.

I started my car today and there was no flashing power light, but also
no AWD (still stuck in the ice). I tried the method for finding
EXISTING codes, and the POWER light just blinked at 1/4sec intervals
continuously....no idea what that means.

I then tried the method for PREVIOUS problems and I get codes 32 and
33...that's VSS1 and VSS2.

Would a malfunction in these components cause the AWD to not work? Why
are there 2 VSS's? What are the odds that they would both go out at
the same time? Also, why is it no longer putting out a code for an
EXISTING problem. Of course I have been unable to drive the car around
as the instructions require...I just sat there and spun the wheels in
the ice.

Only the front wheels spin.

AWD doesn't work in reverse? Are you sure about that? I could swear
that I've gotten out of ice like that in the past in reverse. If that
is the case, I'll just have to remember to back into a parking spot
from now on.

I would assume it does....I know for the 5 spd....it works all the time, because you have a mechanical device that wants to keep constant driveline speed between front and rear.....as for the autos....not sure....I would mostlikely say yes....as to the percentages....don't know....whatever the little programmers told the computer to do.

Sorry for the delay, I've been busy.
I will also not get AWD in reverse. I do have an auto and I think that the computer won't engage
the system for some reason. Someone please correct me if I', wrong (or have some horrible
problem ). As for why you would get both speed sensors stored but not current, there may
have been some snow built up under the car... I would imagine that could short it out. I believe
the speed sensors are actually for the front and real axels, not the tires since the differental
handels traction per wheel. You could also just have a plug loose. I don't actually know where
the sensors or tranny computer are, so I can't really help there. See if it happens again... it could
just be a fluke.

I'm pretty sure my '91 auto is AWD all the time. The guy with the
spinning front wheels must have a problem with his rear diff or
possibly the transfer case (you should be putting more power to the
ground now). Check to see that all your fluids are good. I know I'm
due for new diff fluid and tranny fluid. Time for some synthetic
stuff.
