Wire mesh for a custom Grill. What do YOU use?

Been lusting over a custom grill forever and just couldnt bring myself to cut my stock piece. Got a line on a possible replacement so started thinking about going for it and actually cutting mine up. (( want to cut up mine instead of the replacements as the mounts on the bottom of mine are broken so when and if I "revert to stock" she will be better than she is now.

So I was thinking I want to cut the middle completely out. fill, sand, paint yada yada yada. Then I was thinking I wanted to hang a "LEGACY" emblem on it. I was thinking the Kind you see below the Opera Window on 90 Legacys. I backed my stock Grill with standard Aluminum Window screen painted black.

After... quite a while actually. the screen has become quite distorted by wind and bug impacts. leading me to believe this is a less than optimal set-up for my planned Customization. I went to Home depot but they didnt even have the screen Id uses. just this REAL flimsy almost cloth like screen.

So. Peeps that have done this type of thing. What did YOU use?

Thanks in advance!

Honeycomb alloy. You can buy it in sheet form from McMaster-Carr, though I used black plastic extruded mesh for rain gutters for my Mutant Selena grille and that stuff's much cheaper, more durable, and as good looking unless you're on top of it. Only real disadvantage is that it needs to be supported more, which should be fine for a Legacy grille. The Mutant Selena grille was on an '84 GL and that's got a lot more open area: Image

I'd like to find the interlocking mesh some high end cars use for Tigershark.

i went to ACE hardware and bought a roll of plastic (or ABS) mesh in black its perfect and if you live in an area with crappy weather all the time (cough, Massachusetts, cough, cough) like i used to, it wont rust!!!! I think its in with the gutter guard stuff.

I think they look good, but they have to be done right. Go buy some real mesh, it shouldn't cost that much for a small piece. But I like your grill the way it is now, with the black center and white outline.

Maybe I'm just used to criticism from all the time I've spent on e30 forums  but he didn't seem out of line to me, just sharing his opinion. It's just an internet forum, no reason to get worked up over someone's comment. Then again this forum seems a lot more respectful and open than the other car forums I'm on, strange when you consider the average age is probably lower here, at least I would think.

It does however get annoying when that's all that is in the thread...

Oh my! Mafia I could have used your back up at a Lincoln forum that went from friendly to outright hostile.

But back on topic, I was thinking of a similar mod. I think some of the factors are the size of the holes and geometry of the mesh. Some grills I see look like crap(typically the chrome ones on trucks), some look ok, and some look good. I'd go with a finer mesh, powder coated black.

The 1965 Mustang had a hexagonal mesh grill, and this picture is similar to the iDea I have that is bouncing around in a few brain cells.

A suggested screen I saw recently was from a rain gutter cover. I wouldn't go with chrome, and I think I would get it power coated after I had the geometry and sizing set up. Next is figuring out the plastic filler for the inside of the grill frame where the old cross parts have been cut out.

Dear OP, I got lucky and a local speed shop gave me some scraps of the mesh that they use for the flaming ricer body kits that they install.

I agree that raw mesh steel looks cheap.

But paint goes a long way, and with darkened mesh the subtlety is increased a lot.

I really like my front end and I have mesh in my scoop and grill.

There must be some Mod Shops in Portland somehwere right? If you let them know that you only need about 1.5 square feet, they might be able to hook you up.

I work at a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealer out in the middle of the Mojave desert and I hear it day in and day out from the American Muscleheads how gay Subarus are and how Im stupid from driving a rice burner. Now my dealership just took on Subaru and now people are realizing that maybe Subarus are nice cars, not Jap crap like everyone says. Ignorance is what gets me. I show ppl the 1st Ken Block video and everyone is astonished by his car... FUCK YA ITS A 4 BANGER!!!! HELL YA ITS AWD!!!! SUCK A DICK VIPER, CHARGER, AND CALLENGER!!!! Id like to see any of those cars perform at that level of control. My 2 cents, Im done, SORRY!!!!! -WagonMafia

I liked it better when people didn't know Subarus. Most of my friends in high school had muscle cars and they all ended up respecting the GL for the shear amount of abuse it shrugged off while double or triple their gas mileage (and more attention from girls, but as you can see by my posted picture of Selena, the car had more personality than the average GL).

Dynamic Entry, that looks nice!

I did quite a bit of searching last night, and found that instead of searching for a mesh(which brings up quite a bit of chicken wire :x ), that perforated is the term. However, I'm still looking for what I'm wanting. If '65 Mustang grills weren't so expensive, I'd just buy one and cut it up.
