I'll give you that those chicks are hot as hell.
But I'm fairly certain they are playing over a bassline recording. Violins can't produce that much bass.
Furthermore, using orchestral instruments in modern rock is nothing new either.
You all have probably already heard of
Apocalyptica, who play metal (especially Metallica covers) on cellos. They've gone pop since a couple years ago, with that God-awful song they did with that whiny emo snot from Three Days' Grace. But their older stuff is awesome, especially the album Cult.
There's also a Polish guy named
Jelonek, who, like these girls, jams on the violin with rock music.

Yeah, Apocalyptica's older instrumental stuff is great, but I don't like their vocal stuff—I can't stand their voices.

They themselves don't sing... they bring in singers from other bands.
But yeah, with two or three exceptions, their vocal songs suck.
Nonetheless, I've seen them in concert a couple times, and it is a show like no other. It's astounding to watch them make that kind of music out of cellos.

That makes sense, then, since I've heard two different dudes and a chick singer and they were all terrible. It really seems like a different band in comparison to the kick-ass instrumentals. I was actually listening to their cover of Hall of the Mountain King earlier.

You don't even need instruments necessarily—a pick up can turn anything into an instrument. Or at least a noise generator. An old roommate used to make weird sounding stuff with old guitar pick ups and small electric motors and such.
