Grinding when applying brakes

So here is the deal, 94 turbo wagon, when you apply the brakes their is a grinding noise/feel to the pedal. This doesn't happen all the time, mainly when you really have to slam on the brakes. The ABS light is on.
Any ideas.

What do your pads look like?

The pad and rotors were just replaced a few thousand miles ago. This feels like something in the master cylinder or the abs system.

It is the abs unit trying to slow you down. You might need to replace them depending on the last time you did. By them I mean the part that is connected to the hub.

So when you replace them, do you go used or new? Do they interchange with other years? Knowing subaru, they would most likely cost a fortune.

I would go with new but that's just me. I don't know about interchangeable from different models. But considering how subaru's are lego's its very likely. I would agree about the price.
Ok well a good way to make sure that it is the ABS. Pull the abs fuse. The dash light will come on saying you have a problem(but it's already on so this wont be new to you). Take it for a drive and go to where you can brake really hard and see if it still does it.
