Heatshields

Hey guys after doing my td04 swap, I removed a bunch of heatshields that go around the exhaust and the main chimney of course. Now how will the heatshield that goes along the side I think it was to prevent heat from going near the tranny affect the car? Are they that important?

Also had to remove my uppipe to replace my gaskets behind the rear cam support. I just reused the flat gasket, but in the process snapped off a bolt for the heatshield. Can I get the whole heatshield there a bit rusty around the edges. All my DP and UP gaskets between the turbo were replaced though just a FYI.

Now I am noticing a humming noise to around 2200rpm's not sure if its a exhaust leak or what. Whats your take? One heatshield around where the manifold and uppipe meet is just floating and raddling. Also the mid pipe heat shield is just floating in place. Well now it is atleast after undoing part of the exhaust and moving it around to undo the turbo.

Thanks guys!

Removing the heat shields isn't a big deal. You may get a little more radiated heat, but that shouldn't matter.

Any idea what this humming noise could be on mild throttle? Seems to only come when hot. Its hard to explain very low humming sound but if I give more throttle goes away. Going to put some rubber between any areas touching other metal.

Could be an exhaust shield. I'd say go back and make sure you don't have any metal on metal.

Also, take a hammer and mildly hit the exhaust a few times. It should tell you if you have any other rattles.

Ya need to go over the exhaust but ATM the coolant tank is rubbing the manifold and IC. I think I will put some heaterhose between the points. Thanks!

when I did my TD04 & TMIC I also developed a noise

your description sounds similar

I am under the impression that the intercooler is rubbing on something at certain RPM

like a lot of other people, I didn't fabricate any bracket or tie-down for the top mount, it is held in place by the hose clamps alone

so I think it may be resting on my clutch reservoir

I know that it doesn't touch the firewall at the back, there is a definate clearance there

I moved my coolant tank to where the A/C compressor was
