MAF Translator Pro, Opinions/Thoughts?

As many of you know, I'm slowly working on getting my baby built to the 300chp little devil I want and am currently now thinking through my management system.

Currently the build will consist of -
Standard Fuel mods, including 550+ injectors
3" TBE
Heatwrapped or coated headers
Phenolic spacers
Insulation of the intake manifold
AVO320 turbo (essentially a GT28RS)
Phase I DOHC (EJ20k)
Stock shortblock
Zeitronics Wideband
EGT placed somewhere - still need to research
Extra knock detection - still need to research
Meth/Water injection - no intercooling

I don't want to do a full standalone and I have access to a PP6. However, I hear a lot of unpleasant things about bucking and small issues with the PP6. I understand it's a good product but this is my daily driver and it needs to run "perfect".

Edit : I understand Kelly had his system running great when he had it so perhaps the PP6 will work. Kelly - I'll be happy to take any input you wish to provide here and hope you don't take offense to me transplanting the heart of your car into mine. Your old chassis will still get treated correctly though :).

I also like the thought of getting rid of the MAF and running MAP to clean up my intake tract. Now sure how well this will work with my water injection system.

Having done some reading I see a few good things on Nabisco about the MAF Translator Pro and I know that Dan's friend ran it on his Garret Legacy with sucess (or so Dan says). The system seems to be a very capable system and I like the closed loop AF/fuel control it offers - again though I don't know how my water/meth injection will affect this.

So I'm basically looking for opinions on the system and experiences.

I would also welcome any comments on caveats or things I need to be aware of when using an injection system instead of intercooling.

As always, many thanks guys.

I don't have any experience with the MAF translator, but I would recommend staying MAF vs. going MAP. Just get a higher range MAF sensor, sti or WRX with a custom intake setup and use the MAF translator to try and tune things with the stock ECU.

My only word of caution though is you will probably fight the stock ECU when trying to tune and get everything setup. A piggy back ECU is still that, a piggy back. The maf translator may provide you with the extra tweaking of the MAF signal to make everything work...

I tend to agree with you Josh but one of the reasons I'm leaning towards the MAF Translator Pro is sounds as if it will also give me the ability to control timing as well as fuel. It has a seperate map so I'm not really 'adjusting' the MAF signal going to the ECU but am rather controlling fuel and timing directly.

Or so I understand. Granted this is a little different than most piggy back systems.

Here's the website - http://www.maftpro.com/tproinfo.shtml

I do appreciate the feedback though.

Edit : Reading the downloaded manual indicates that you are right Josh and this does just "adjust" the signal going to the ECU for the MAF to control fueling... hmm...

Derek (Whitelegacyguy) rans his for quite a while on it. He wasn't controlling timing though. However the car ran great.

It used a GM air temp sensor, so there were no issues with temperature changes. It will also track a wideband. I would assume that you'll have one.

The built in boost control was very nice. Leaps and bounds better than what my Link can do or his current Hydra.

He still has his system and might be willing to part with it if you PM him. I know he had to get ahold of the guy who writes the firmware for it so he could make it work on the SS.

PM Whitelegacyguy for more specifics.

The MafTPro works great for what it is. I had no issues with bucking or any of that nonsense. You are limited on how big you can go with injectors though. I was running some 660 venoms and 60psi base fuel pressure without issue, but i think that 720 - 750cc/min is about max you could run without getting an overly rich idle.

The boost control is awesome. Its worlds easier to setup than my shitty hydra EMS boost control(switched to a hallman). It also has an adjustable Fuel Cut Defencer. The logging on the PC software is ok too.

I had mine setup to use the Zetronix map sensor. The wideband Air/Fuel tracking is pretty good also.
It is also pretty easy to tune with.
Adjustable timing is maybe a possibility. If nothing else you could get a MSD box.

PM me and ill shoot you a screamin' deal on the unit and some 660cc injectors, E-bay FPR and modded 2.5 NA rails.

Later
Derek

Derek,

Many thanks for the input. I'll be having more questions in the future I'm sure. BTW, there is a PM waiting for you to take you up on a screamin' deal :).

Thank you.

Derek,

You have 'another' PM. I'm getting your's coming through so if mine didn't make it through from today let me know and we can either keep playing with PM's or move it to email.

Again, many thanks.

This is the first I've heard of this program but it sounds like exactly what I need. I have 440cc injectors and an MBC and am right at the limit of the factory 12psi fuel cut. I'm trying to figure out what my next step should be, whether that is simply a fuel cut defender or something like this MafTPro. I'd be interested in learning more about this as well. How much do they go for used?
