Has anybody had any problems with their gearbox or clutch? What is the normal life of these items and if they need replacing is it possible to upgrade? Also, what type of gear oil and differential oil is best?

The standard clutch and gearbox are the weakest links in a turbo Legacy, but
life expectancy is entrely dependent on driver style.

The clutch in particular does not have sufficient clamping pressure to
withstand high rev standing starts, and will slip til you back off the revs.
The gearbox gear set will eventually "explode" with regular "clutch dumps".

The gear box can use conventional hypoid or synthetic oils as the centre
diff viscous coupling is a sealed unit. The rear limited slip diff uses a
viscous clutch pack which requires hypoid oil only.

I have a problem with my second gear grinding. If you go slow enough it wont
grind but when your trying to accelerate quick, you can feel and hear it.

First thing I would do is change your tranny fluid and look for filings.

Either way you're going to have to drop the trans to fix something like that. Don't forget to change the clutch pad when you do. The pad only costs a few bucks and you'll really kick yourself if you have to pull the whole $%^^)_@ thing just to change a $20 part you could have changed at the same time just a couple years (depending on mileage/driver type) ago (retrospectively) when you pull it to fix that gear.

My $0.02

I would first change the oil and check the sump plug (magnet) for iron
filings.

I had this problem a while back when I put mobil 1 in my 91 legacy
turbo. Changed back to standard Valvoline and the problem is much
better. If I am changing gears, I still feel the teeth catching, but
I just assume that it comes with having 168k on the car.
