NEW to the Scene - 91 Legacy - Need Help on Exhaust

Hey everyone! I am new to the Legacy scene and I just purchased a 1991 Legacy Wagon (non-turbo) 5MT. It is white and in pretty good condition. I have already replaced the battery, changed the oil, replaced a ball joint and all front brake pads.

I had a local garage check out the Subaru and it turns out that I need a whole exhaust system replacement. They said an OEM replacement is $1400!!! I am in no way going to spend that much money for an OEM exhaust. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? I am open to both OEM systems and aftermarket.

I am also looking for a new clutch too if anyone has one.

I am looking forward to getting my Subbie in great shape!

Thank you everyone!
Brad from VA

Welcome to the BBS Brad.

I'd recommend trying to find a decent exhaust from a Legacy in the junkyard. Otherwise, I'd have an exhaust shop fab something up.

Thank you Legacy777! I love Subaru's. My brother has an STi and I actually had to just sell my STi. We love the cars.

As far as exhaust, is there an aftermarket one out there that would be beneficial as well? I don't want anything too loud.

You can get a decent SS manifold on Ebay, the one for the Impreza 2.5RS will work with your car. Then the rest of it you can get made cheaply at an exhaust shop.

I thought it was agreed upon that aftermarket headers on these cars were just a waste of money and the stock headers flow good.

On Turbos they are.

but yea you can get a complete aftermarket for cheaper than Subaru. i have a Prodrive muffler( not on yet) but it only cost 375 and headers are like 400, so that still leaves 600 according to your quote they gave you and im sure labor shouldnt cost that much. good luck

What I meant is there is proven power gains when using aftermarket headers on N/A EJ motors:

For our turbos I guess the jury is out?

If you could find an MRT equal length header setup from an impreza, there are gains that can be had.

Otherwise, you may see slight butt dyno improvement, but it's nothing significant.

Thank you for the recommendation! So, everyone is in agreement that this would do the trick? Then I could just use my stock cat and get some sort of cat-back for the rest?

So, go with Aerotech suggested then? I doubt I can find an OEM system in good condition anymore I guess. Get what Aerotech suggested then build a custom exhaust from that point on?

What is a good muffler to get that isn't loud but enables you to hear the boxer sound?

How does the Prodrive muffler sound? What header did you get? Where did you get it?

I'm sorry guys, I'm new with this Legacy stuff...

Get a hi-flow cat too. You can get one on ebay for $40 or something. If you're going to get a higher flowing header and muffler, why leave the stock cat in? That just seems like a waste of money to me.

If your going for a FULL exhaust, you can get a Dowpipe all the way back from a WRX. You will have to have an exhaust shop extend it though, other than that it works perfect. I bough a Megan Catless Bellmouth DP, and Autospeed Catback exhaust(no cats), and fitted/extended for around $450, so 1400 is REDICULOUS for an exhaust. Seeing as you dont need a 3" you should be able to get a full exhaust for 200-400 I would imagine. Best of luck and welcome to the boards!

No doubt. I just bought a WRX 3" DP, midpipe with resonator and Bosal twin tip muffler for $250 used. Full exhaust for $250. I would NEVER spend $1400 on an exhaust.

damn $250 for the whole TBE? nice! Thank you for repping the twin tip muffler with me! Do you like the sound of yours? I love the sound of mine but not loud enough for me :(

Yeah but I gotta have it shipped to me. Jess AKA PhyrraM picked it up for me.

Thanks guys for the help. I really appreciate everyone helping me out.

The only thing is I don't need a DP as my car is N/A.

I see your point on not going back to stock on the cat and muffler as I will have the aftermarket header.

Any kind of high-flow cat I should be looking for?

I will plan on getting the header from taco taco above and then buying a high-flow cat and some type of muffler and have a exhaust shop make it for me.

Does that sound good?

What size piping are you going to use? I have 2 brand new 3" borla PRO XS mufflers. One is a single tip and is centered on one end and offset on the other end. Then other muffler is the same muffler but is centered on one end and on the outlet side it's dual dipped. I also have 2 nice tips to go on it. It's all brand new and I just bought it from summit racing to go on my car but then decided to go with the dual tipped one and then found a whole exhaust that I just bought.

I paid like $100 for each muffler and the tips were $40 each. I think.

It's all 3" though, don't know what size you're looking for.

Here's the cat I was talking about. $42+$12 shipping.

Someone else has it on their car here and he showed it to me so I bought one and will be using it on my car.

Thanks for the help! I'm not sure what tubing I am going for. I don't really think I need to go as big as 3", maybe 2.5". Do you have pictures of the mufflers? I think I would be more interested on the single tip.

Wow, thanks! That does look good. I don't want my exhaust to be too loud. How do you think the set up would sound with the taco taco header, this cat, and the borla exhaust you have? Too loud?

Doesn't look like I have pictures of the single tip offset/center muffler but it looks exactly the same just has single in/out with one centered and one off to the side.

Tips do not fit over the muffler outlets unfortunately they are the same exact size.

Wow, man. That looks great! How would it sound? Thank you so much for the pics. How much would you be selling the mufflers for? Tips?

This is starting to look like a good set up huh?

I'm not trying to force a sale on you, just letting you know I have them if you happened to be looking for a 3" exhaust. You don't need one, that's for sure but then again neither do I lol. I read in a book on turbochargers that a 3" exhaust is good for like 700hp or something so it's overkill really.

I think I had them up for sale for $75 shipped even though I'd probably lose about $60 per muffler after paying shipping twice on it and cutting the price down. Sucks to think about it. For the tips, I'd say $30 shipped a piece.
