99 EJ22 block swap

My cousin has a 99 OBS that the motor blew in. Well maintained, she doesn't abuse it, it ran great ect.... According to the garage she took it to a "piston shattered" I'll diag it to see what really happened but in all likely hood it needs a shortblock. Hopefully it didn't bend any valves.

Can I use a phase 1 ej22 shortblock with her phase 2 heads? I know they will bolt up and as long as I use her t-belt tensioner and crank sprocket it should work, but will there be a problem with the shape of the phase 1 pistons and the phase 2 heads?

I know there's differences with the 2.5l heads on 2.2l blocks, but phase 2 2.2l heads on a 2.2l block I'm not sure of.

Phase 2 EJ22's are harder to come by and I can get phase 1's cheap and do the swap in a weekend.

Not sure. Guy I bought suspension from had a phase 2 block (2.5) with phase 1 heads (also 2.5) running in his car that came originally with a phase 1 motor.

Don't know about your situation, but since you're keeping the heads/intake manifold, electronics the same as what went with the car, I'm sure someone who knows more can confirm.

You will have lower compression with a phase 1 block.
The pistons in the phase 2 block practically don't have any dish in them and the phase 1 have a moderate dish. If the pistons are good in the phase 2 block remove them and put them in the phase 1 block and be good to go.
