im pretty sure i figured out my problem, had a buddy ride with me yesterday and he put his hand on the floor in from of the back seat on that hump where the shaft goes to the back of the car. He could feel something seriously loose so im pretty sure my u joint is ready to explode. The haynes manual says to just replace the whole shaft. fair enough will a auto legacy shaft work or do i need a 5mt one, or is it possible to change the u joint?

I'm pretty sure you need the 5MT driveshaft, but not 100% sure. I don't think you can just replace the u-joint....there is no way to unbolt it.
I am thinking maybe the driveshaft bushing is toast.
You might think about getting a driveshaft form a junk yard.

yeah i have a junkyard out here that has one, but now that i get under the car and can feel both ends of the shaft it doesnt seem like a u joint is bad. The bushing is the big rubber part in the middle or is it the part that holds the two shafts together?

A decent drive shaft shop should be able to replace the u-joint but its deffinatly not a DIY job, my roomate had the one in his STi driveshaft replaced when it was in the shop to get lengthend to fit in his frankenwagon.
