Nissan Rogue CVT reliability

Hey guys,

I'm trying to help a friend get a new car. She is between the rav4 and the rogue currently. We are thinking the rogue because she likes it better but I'm just concerned about the CVT tranny.

Has anyone heard about any potential nightmares with these that I should advise her not to buy one of these?

Thanks,

Mike

All I can say is I don't particularly like the CVT transmission. Had one of these as a rental car, and I just didn't like it.

As for longevity....sorry, I don't have any info...

I hear you. I havent heard anything other than some ticking noise from from the NICO board that members were complaining about.

As for the no gear thing my friend liked it because she said she just stepped on the gas a little more and the torque curve was there without a downshift. She said that normally you would have to mash the pedal to get it to downshift to pass.

She drove the rav4 and the CRV which both have the same or more HP and said they felt like they were weaker.

I know the early ones rushed to market on the Murano were junk, but that was about a decade ago so they probably fixed the issues by now, especially if it's the 2.5 or whatever the 4 cylinder is—I stopped caring about Nissan when my 260Z was a POS, never mind the junk Maximas my sister and ex liked.

I think the drivability of the CVT is highly dependent on the programming.

....and personal preference & driving style.

Yes, but some lag more than others in jumping to peak power was more what I meant. There are also those stupid fake gears some of them have, but that's something different. Personally, I like the idea of them, but not the reality of them.

Most of the CVT's in Japanese cars are made by jatco.

I test drove a nissan sentra recently. It was so funny. Actually at the beginning seemed pretty good. It actually drives fine for a DD. If you give it minor throttle accelerates just fine. What was really dumb was when I floored it. Was pretty funny. Foot to the floor all it does is jump all the way to redline, stay there as the car slowly accelerates. The way I drive, just would not work.

We got the loaded out one MSRP of $29,600 for $26,700. $2900 under sticker, not too bad all things considered. My "client" was very pleased.

Yup....that's what the rogue did for me too.....just stays at redline.....really wouldn't work for my driving style.
