Hey people,I would like some advice,or input on what to do about my
exhaust.I have a US spec 1993 Legacy Turbo. My current exhaust
includes a custom downpipe.This downpipe is beautifully
crafted,straight through design,and made out of stainless.The only
drawback to this pipe is that it is only 2.25"ID.I am also running a
straight through exhaust(2.25 also)the rest of the way back with the
stock muffler.I am definately going to replace the stock muffler,but
I was wondering what you people thought about going to a 2.5 or 3"
system from the downpipe back.Would this be worth it since my
downpipe is only 2.25"ID? BTW, I am also running K&N drop in filter
with the water separator removed,hallman boost controller at 12psi
and a huge(for a subaru) top mounted air/air intercooler. Thanks BillC

aspirated with no or mild mods, then a 2" will do ya fine. If it is
naturally aspirated with some internal mods, then go with a 2.25"

I prefer custom made exhausts to pre-made, they tend to be cheaper (at least
in my neck of the woods).

jason thanks for the reply i might try and mod a janspeed rear box and
centre as i can get them second hand a new mongoose system from turbo back

Wow, that's nice!

I notice the o2 sensor, and possibly even a Cat.

This is available for the BC-BF? Will it bolt to the US version or
just your EJ20. Guess they don't have any EJ22Ts to test on.

Maybe they'd consider letting me test it?

Well the MRT exhaust system is now fitted and what a differance, Power is delivered in a much better way . Sound is not a problem, just a bit more sporty than standard. When you change from 2nd to 3rd it seems to stay on boost much more and pull more strongly, when i get the unicip put on it should be much better. It took one day to get the old system off ,stripping two nuts in the process. But the new system went on without a hitch quality was superb

I have a 2.2l my93 non-turbo liberty and was wondering if
anybody knows, thru experience, if I upgrade to a cat-back sports
exhaust behind the existing OEM system will it replicate that
distinct boxer note as you would get when upgrading an exhaust on a
WRX or Turbo Liberty.?
Reason I ask is that I have heard exhausts on other non-Turbo
Liberty's and it doesn't replicate the sound very well. But I know it
can becasue I can slightly hear my one thru my stocky exhaust.

do you live? I'm from Brisbane.
I've got a 93 NA Liberty LX, that i've slowly been enhancing. (by
next thursday will be STI spec AWD hehehe)

With the exhaust i would reccomend if you really want that boxer
sound, to get a 3 inch turbo muffler, and matching 3 inch pipe to the
cat. This won't give you too much more performance increase, but will
give you that boxer note.
Also that can be quite loud, so it's best to also get a resonator
fitted with that. I have a friend with a NA liberty with the complete
stock exhaust, just with a 3 inch turbo muffler and that does sound
good, very purry.

If you wanna find out more about your car, go to this forum, these
guys are mainly Australian, and have done everything possiblee to
subaru's of all different years.

No it won't you have to change the header pipes to change the sound
of the motor. I am not sure what you are calling the boxer note, but
a lot of Subarus I have heard have a really raspy tinny sound at
2,800 rpm until 3,500 rpm. I did my exhaust myself so I didn't have
that problem.

Daniel-The factory muffler is very restrictive (someone from your neck of the woods put pictures in the Legacy files of a cut-away of that muffler.) Before I turbo`d my NA motor, I had a Dynaflow low-restriction muffler put on. It sounded good & helped a little. I now have a custom 2.25 system with a high-flow cat & no resonator; it sounds like a V8! Remember, any improvement in air flow in & out will help.---ROD (AZ.)

About the 3 inch being too big - Yeah is sorta true. (I only have
2.25 and 2.5 and that's good enough) But my mates does sound really
good with just the stock pipes and a 3" muffler.
Personally i did my exhaust mods for performance reasons - to allow
better flow after my engine mods. Apparently 2.5 inch is fine for a
standard engine, and will allow good flow after other engine mods.

I recommend for better performance, getting custom headers made. It
only cost me $160 and it added much better acceleration and torque
down low.

Don't have time to describe them now, gotta study for a uni exam, but
if you do a search on this site, for custom extractors, a previous
description of what i got done will come up. Definately worth the
money!!

Stainless is lighter and aftermarket jobs are usually made with much larger bores throughout - hence better flow and performance (for turbos anyway). The price difference is actually not as much you'd think. Real bugger about stainless is IF it doesn't quite fit and you have to do some messing around because stainless is more difficult to weld.

I assume that's Oz dollars - even still that's pretty expensive - probably because of the cat. Assume stainless is from MRT. If you can do without the cat then you can stainless systems for considerably less.

Stainless is lighter and aftermarket jobs are usually made with much larger bores throughout - hence better flow and performance (for turbos anyway). The price difference is actually not as much you'd think. Real bugger about stainless is IF it doesn't quite fit and you have to do some messing around because stainless is more difficult to weld.

I assume that's Oz dollars - even still that's pretty expensive - probably because of the cat. Assume stainless is from MRT. If you can do without the cat then you can stainless systems for considerably less.

Ah, the joys of having a pre-cat required car ) Anyway, still looks like the catted downpipe really ramps up the price. Catless you could get a stainless system (here anyway) for £420 - $1050(??)

Hey Kam,

What type of car you have? Pretty much any and all the legacies had cat's on them from the factory, hence will require you to keep them on. I don't know of any legacy that walked out the door without a cat on it.

Do they have different emission laws across the pond?

Also.....do these cars have two cat's or one....keeping in mind, I have a N/A 2.2. Is the collector where the O2 sensor screws in nothing more then that....a collector point........or does it also have some sort of catalyst in it as well. I know there is a cat, or at least I'm pretty damn sure it is, downstream, about mid way down the exhaust.

Also.....does the turbo exhaust start at the same point that the N/A 2.2 does.....ie. is the position the same when I come off the collector and go into the exhaust.....as the same on the turbo.....coming from the downpipe....into the exhaust....

I sure hope someone can make some sense of my horrible explanation....hahaha
