Wastegate Issues

Okay so this is the second wastegate actuator I've had on this td04... the first one just siezed up so I had to take it off and run open wastegate for awhile which meant No Powahhhhhh...

Then I got another actuator. And all was well. Well sort of. When I swapped in the god-awful ej20g it started acting up. There is a line going directly from the turbo port on the compressor housing to the wastegate with no boost controller or anything.

So what its doing now is spiking (sometimes a LOT) and settling sometimes at 10 and sometimes and 15 and its really pissing me off because I have to watch it extremly closely every time I get on it.

Any thoughts???

Sounds like the actual wastegate itself is sticking. Where the actuator connects to the wastegate there is like a lil sleeve that the rod runs through and connects to the wastegate flapper, sometimes corrosion/rust accumilates in the sleeve. You can try squirting some WD40 down into the sleeve and see if it helps. Have you tried just disconnecting the actuator rod and moving the wastegate to feel if it is sticky? I would remove the actuator rod and spray some WD40 in the sleeve and work it back and forth a couple times, I usually do this from the inside of the turbo too, but you should be able to get enough WD40 in from outside.

FAIR WARNING: WD40 is FLAMABLE.
I would not do this on an extremely hot turbo, but I've done it on a warm turbo(warm, but cool enough to touch), afterwards it just smoked alil when it warmed up but no flames.

You sure the "new" actuator is good?

Good luck
