this is recent e-mail correspondence between a USA based engineer and Subaru regarding the new diesel Forester available in Europe and Australia....

don't get too excited, our tier 4 program is brutal!!! maybe in a few years they will pay for development costs, and then be able to cave to american political tolerance.

"I recently received an answer from Subaru as to the availaility of the forester diesel in the States. Here is what they had to say.....

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and for your interest in Subaru products, namely a Subaru Forester diesel model.

The Subaru diesel models offered in Europe do not meet the standards of the US. Subaru has not yet announced when diesel-powered models would be available in the US. However, we appreciate your interest and your suggestion for this model specification.

Early in 2008, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), our parent company introduced the world's first turbo diesel boxer engine for sale in European markets in the Legacy and Outback model lines. We then introduced diesel-powered Impreza and Forester models in Europe late last year. Mr. Mori, FHI Chairman, had indicated early last year that we are investigating bringing U.S. diesel models States-side in the next few years.

Your message has been provided to our Product Management Department for their review, tracking and consideration. Subaru is always striving to improve upon our products and we appreciate when our customers bring their interests to our attention.

Thank you again, Brian, for your interest in Subaru products.

Sincerely,

John J. Mergen

I wouldn't mind a mid-sized AWD sedan that gets 41 mpg.

Or a 1500 lbs. vehicle that gets over 90. Though, according to what I've read, I can actually import one and instal it legally (or I could do it after it's titled, but then I'll have a transmission to worry about) since it won't technically be going into a car. Big money, anyway. I'll wait for DI, whenever the hell they'll get that rolling. Euro tier 4 is very similar to our standards, but diesel is different. They might be able to pass the lenient 45, but wouldn't be able to sell in the 5 states with stricter standards—big market states. They've been working for years in getting US and Euro standards to be the same, but with the unearned egos of idiot politicians, who knows if that will ever happen.

I am more interested in the transmission they use than the engine itself

ciper, that's got to be a bad-azz tranny, huh... that diesel is certainly pounding out some low rpm torque! fitting that to a modern turbo gas, sounds like the hot ticket!!!....

I had read originally that they built a 6-speed just for it and didn't have an auto that could handle it.
