2.2 to 2.5 swap in "97 Legacy

So it looks like I'm going to acquire a '97 Leggy in exchange for some work. Only problem is it will basically need a motor and trans. The motor in it somehow has a "broken block" by the crank, I really don't know what happened! Any way, my buddy is going to pick it up and use the trans in his outback. I have a trans I can throw in there for now, and I can get a 2.5 for free also! (Apparently it "knocks" but I think it's just piston slap, idk).
So, my question is, would this be a plug and play swap? I've read that it is plug and play going the other way (swapping only the motor). Would the 2.5 run ok off the 2.2 ECU?
I am also considering putting the 2.2 heads on the 2.5 block, but if I can put this car back on the road for free that's what I want to do!

2.5 will be a direct swap, 2.2 ecu will run it.

Remember the Outbacks diff ratio is 4.44 on the Automatics. The regular Leg is 4.11.

Read/been told that this will give you very low compression....??
Lots o' info on the USMB site, too.

Which 2.5 liter engine? Depending on what you get it can be really easy or sorta easy lol
My old build thread might help

Actually that would be the HCF (High Compression Frankenstine) as seen in this LONG thread with infinite information

You will most likely need to swap headers from the single port 2.2L to the dual port 2.5L.

Turns out it was a FWD car so it was useless to my buddy! He sold it to another buddy of mine who plans on turning it for a profit.

If you need any info on 2.5L block with 2.2L heads let me know. I bulid such an engine in 2006 and it's still running great. In fact I never get tired of driving the Legacy with this engine

which phase block and head gaskets are you using? i have some ej22e dualport heads (thanks binford!) waiting for a good cheap shortblock to show up (and extra time and money too

). getting real tired of my little ej18.
