My 93 L w 205k is leaking some oil. I'm trying to get an idea about how many oil seals the 2.2 has. Here is my list so far:

Front of Engine:

- Right/Left Cam Seal
- Main Seal
- Oil pump seal

- Timing belt cover seals (These really don't do much to keep oil in, but mainly to keep moisture out, correct?)

Rear of Engine:

- Main seal

Anything else on the rear? Does the rear main tend to fail on these engines?

For the rear you got the Oil Separator Plate, its a plate located right of the rear oil seal if your looking at it. if the plate is plastic it needs to be replaced to the aluminum design and some silicone gasket to seal it. I'd probably take care of the rear passenger side cam o-ring and the front driver side cam o-ring too. oh did you double check that the oil pressure sensor/power steering pump isnt leaking? pretty sure someone else will recommend something else i missed

New valve cover gaskets, and the grommets for the bolts are always a good idea.

These are usually the main culprit for oil leaks, make sure you get the bolt gaskets as well as the valve cover gaskets.

Have you actually located the leak yet? That will save you a significant amount of coin on parts.


Are the timing cover gaskets swollen?

Yeah.....try degreasing the engine and see where the leak is coming from. The grommets on the valve covers are typical places for leaks. Also the oil filler neck o-ring.

Yeah, my next step is to degrease the engine and take a look to see if I can identify where its coming from. Its probably multiple places. I'll report back. I will check out the valve cover grommets as well.

Also, if it is the rear main, does the trans need to be fully removed from the car?

Is the procedure something like, remove CV's, torq convertor bolts, engine trans bolts, linkage, and then slide it back? Does this take much effort?

If it's the rear main, or oil separator plate (more likely culprit) yeah you need to fully remove the transmission.

You need to remove the driveline before you try and move the transmission. Also, when you remove the transmission you need to try and keep the torque converter seated. I'll say though, removing the automatic transmission is a complete and utter pain in the ass!! If you have a trans jack, it should help.
