STi shifter linkage impossible to install?

I picked up an STi shifter linkage with the kartboy SS, pivot, front/rear and linkage bushings for a stealing 75. only problem is that folks around here have confirmed that its not interchangeable, i wanted to really see what was so different. pulled a spare linkage out of a 1999 legacy outback from the closet. seems the bottom long bar that connects to the tranny is different. the STi bottom is shorter and theirs no way of install the SS onto outback linkage. So i plan on going to a welder and extending that bar. Hopefully i can just take the OB bar, cut and weld it to the STi linkage. as for the upper linkage bar, its a close but not as off as the bottom bar.

has anyone done such a mod to make the STi linkage work?
