This morning was quite cold and there was frost on my car... this is
only like my 3rd time parking my car outside overnite.. when i warmed
it up for around 60seconds, put down the handbrake, for a split
second the hand brake light on dashboard turned off and daytime
running light turn on.. then the DRL turned off and handbrake light
stayed on for the whole time through my whole trip to school.. i am
sure that i lowered my handbrake the whole way because in each light
stop, i pulled it up and released it again just to make sure...

In the afternoon when i started the car, everything is fine and
handbrake light turned off as usual when i put the handbrake down and
it will turn on when i pull it up...

I was wondering if this is caused by the frost and shorting out a
sensor because i parked outside or is it something else.. Anyone has
expierienced this before?

That's mainly correct....I'll add a couple things.

The rear parking brake assembly is a drum brake inside the hub of the rear rotor, so the shoes if they stuck to the drum part they usually stick fast....and you will not move. However if the linkage and such froze, that would produce the results described by Sambo. More than likely there is some moisture in your parking brake cable, and the tension was not all released from the shoes. Second thing....unless you're driving in slushy snow...or have moixture or something somewhere, parts, brakes, cables, etc, will not freeze....you need moisture to have the parts freeze.

Don't know if it was snowing or stuff and you were driving around and then left it outside over night.....that would explain what happen

thanks.. i won't put my handbrake on in cold climate again....

hmm.. just wondering.. how would u explain the part when the
handbrake light just turned off for a split second when i let it
off.. i am sure that it was off for a splt second becoz the Daytime
running light came on.... the light stayed on during my whole trip
until i shut off the car... i was driving in dry roads for past 2
days.. 3 or 4 days ago i drove in snow.. dunno if that affected it...

anyways.. i don't think it wore down to nothing.. thank god...
because when i was coasting, the car was coasting quite normally when
i coasted out of my driveway....

Mine has drums for the parking brake. The disks are only for stopping!
90LS wagon with four wheel disks.
