Hi, I'm new here I have a 90 legacy L 2.2 n/t awd 5 SPT and i need new Struts and I also wanted to give my car a little bit of a lif because I plan on putting on a little bit bigger tires that are a/t. I was reading around a little bit to find out what all I can do with my car( if anyone wants to fill me in on the basics of what I can do with it that would be much appreciated)and I seen that 98 outback struts and springs are a little bit bigger than regular and are a direct bolt in on the early 90 models. Is this true? Can anyone help me with this. I'm going to end up replacing my struts atleast anyways cause they are noisy and bouncy lol. I also wanted to do the snorkusectumy thing and was wondering if anyone could help me with that. This is the first Subaru I have owned and it has made me love subarus, they just kick @$$ in every way
By the way here's a pic

As for struts, yes the outback struts are probably the way to go. You may run into an issue/difference between the strut top mount design between the Outback struts and the stock ones on the 1990. I don't recall whether the difference is just in the mounts, or if the chassis is different. I think it's just the mount, but hopefully someone can confirm that.
Regarding the snorkel, check out this thread. There's more in the intake forum if search.

Does anyone know if it's a straight bolt in job or if the top mounts are different? Thnx for the info on the snorkel. How much louder does it make a big difference when u take off the thing that makes it quiet because I don't want my car to sound like crap cuz it just has the stock exaust, but if it's a nice sound then i want to hear hat boxer roar.

You will get some noise during acceleration. It's kind of like a growl. It sounds good.
If you don't like it, you can always put the snorkel back in. It's two bolts I believe holding it in there.

Here's what I posted just about one year ago:
'96-99 Outback struts are bolt-on for the fronts; the rears on my '90 (and '91) needed the tophats swapped. EDIT: I did the ghetto fix and just enlarged the two outer holes to fit.
Mark the top bolts on the front struts as they are oval and used for camber adjustment. Put 'em back where they were and your alignment should be close. Get it checked, just in case.
You can also use Forester struts, but the front will sit higher than the rear.
BTW, also check out USMB.org/forum...you'll find a lot of info there on lifts, etc.
Good luck,
Td
