Clogged Screen??

Well hopefully you guys can help me decided what to do with my transmission problems.

I have 94 SS turbo with 176k miles on it. Shifts great up to 4th gear then won’t go into 5th. This only happen 80% of the time but it’s a real pain avoiding highways.

Im thinking it might be a clogged screen, any other ideas??

Im thinking a transmission flush or fluid change with a screen cleaning might do the trick but Ive heard with the high mileage transmission its better to leave it alone because of the grit and friction it produces.

I know this is a heated debate but wanted to get some of your opinions to help me make a more concrete decision.

Thanks

I'm guessing this is an automatic trans due to the comments about the screen.....Is that correct? If so, the auto trans only has 4 gears, not 5.

It does have a torque converter lockup, which you may be thinking is the 5th gear. If the trans is not going into lockup, you may have some other issues.

Is your speedometer working? Any other issues/codes with the car?

Yes its an automatic

Yeah I always thought it had 5 but I guess not. I get up to about 50 and the rmps start rising and it feels like it needs to shift. then Im that guy on the highway going 50 to keep the rpms lower than 4

Speedometer works fine, yes my check engine light is on but its always on. I try to run the codes tonight if I have time

Other than that really no other issues

What othe problems might I have?

Thanks

Check the ECU for codes and let us know what you find out. You may also want to run the active diagnostic check with the green connectors. Instructions are on my site.

Try clearing the codes and then check again to see if both codes come back.

You can also try running the d-check mode with the green connectors to perform a more active diagnostic.
