Cooling system debris?

Found this under my radiator cap:

It has the consistency of fine sand. It doesn't feel or smell oily.
This is how much I got out:

I'd estimate it to be about a tablespoon. I don't have any overheating problems and the motor has good compression. It doesn't use any oil between changes, either. Any ideas as to what it could be or where it could be coming from?

Old coolant. Flush the system out and replace it.

Well here's more support for regularly flushing the cooling system:

Before I got around to flushing my system one of the endtanks developed a crack necessitating radiator replacement. After removing the rad I decided to remove the endtanks and that is what I found inside. Hard to tell from the pics, but its about 1/4 cup of what I can only describe as a clay-like substance. I can only imagine how much more is clogging up the radiator tubes.

Looks to me like stop leak... I did similar and it resulted in my car slightly overheating, and the fans not cycling. I went to the extent of replacing the motor! Yet in the end it was my heatercore that was clogged so I backflushed it with 3000psi of nitrogen, water, soap. If the heatercore doesn't flow properly coolant will not circulate to the back of the thermostat when it is closed.
