Teaser pic of the rally car.(Biggreen's rally build)

Post by biggreen96 »

I have been mentioning for over a year now that I've been planning get into rally. Well there is no turning back now. Image

I plan to have it done within the month for entry into Rally Idaho. edit: bwhahahaha 1 month? WTF was I thinking!

I'm still in need of lots of parts, if anybody in the northwest has:

a manual trans drive shaft
manual trans crossmember
15 inch wheels
a new windshield
cv's to fit a 4.11 legacy outback diff

that would be awesome.

nice fit on the A Pillar. is that a kit? is that a hydrolic handbrake i see?

i am looking to prep a car for some regional club rallies in MN. probably a 90 FWD legacy (or impreza if i can find a cheap enough one) for G2.

No on the kit, yes on the hydro handbrake. Cage is by me entirely. It's my first attempt and so far it's good. I plan to have it logbooked this weekend actually.

Definitely not the first time with the welder, but first humongous project with it. I've had the thing for a few years now, a Lincoln precision tig 185.

Did you remove the roof panel to fit/weld the cage?

Nope, cut holes in the floor. Dropped it down more than enough to get to the welds.

That's what I thought, the plates look just like mine. You must have seen the same article in Miller's website.

I do not know the article you speak of... is it a Miller welding article? Or Miller person writing about his car?

we are lining up the finances now. our legacy may be too rusty under the car near where the trailing arms connect. might build an impreza instead. we are going for G2 since there are so many G2 cars in MN.

The cage did, yes. I had never done a cage before, but my welding is good, so I'm in business.

F'n sweet man! It's cool to see someone really take hold and move forward with a project like this. Well done on the chassis and cage too - I know many of those certifications don't come without a fair bit of scrutiny.

Again, looking good!

Actually I will bail on the race...

I was jaded by rally fever. I stood back and looked at my to-do list. FUCK. Started noting things I could do without to make it. Hmm Hydro Hand Brake, umm roof scoop, lets see reduced and simplified wiring, window tint(yeah), beefed up sump guard mounts, installing the odo, fixing my port-a-tent, etc etc.

I realized if I was going to race proper, I wasn't racing Idaho.

It's not enough to have all the parts ready to be bolted in and on. Gotta have the time too. (BTW I've found all the parts listed up there now.)

Here's some more recent pics:

Well after getting completely burnt out failing to make Idaho Rally I took 2 weeks off from the car.

Last night after work and tonight after work I fabbed the selt belt mounts.

Anti sub belt mounts.

Shoulder belts.
Image

If you notice the cut on the mount there is wavy, it's because it is. I built the cage and all the plates with a fucking ghetto ass sawzall and shittttty Harbor frightening tube notcher. Though you can get surprisingly good cuts if you clamp a straight edge to your piece and be diligent about it. The notcher is crap and barely made it through the cage. It's going to the heap.

The one GREAT thing that came out of missing Idaho Rally- I got the entire 850 entry fee back. And a couple days later, a STi 6 speed and r180 pops up on NASTYCLOCK for 1500, and axles for another 150. It was way late when I saw it and just decided to throw a weird ass number at the guy. 1323 for the lot, I can paypal you right now. Bam it's mine. Can't wait to meet this guy and shake his hand for offering such an amazing price.
