I have a 92 turbo auto, and I recently destroyed my transmission in an amateur rally. I was wondering if installing a tranny cooler is a good idea on these cars? I am planning on installing that shift kit that everyone seems to recommend, but doing these tsd rally's is very hard on the transmission and I don't really want to go through the hassle of converting it over to a mt.


Also I have never installed a transmission cooler, does any one know where I can find some insturctions on how to do it best? (if its worth doing on my car that is)

I think they come with a transmission cooler, but I'm basing that on the OEM radiator I replaced having an internal transmission cooler setup. If that's the case, all you'd have to do is get a better cooler, mount it, and extend those lines to it.

I would imagine an aftermarket cooler would be better since the factory one is integrated into the radiator. You could get a larger one aftermarket and/or locate it in a cooler area.

Alot of the American oem hd transmission coolers were air to air units that were after the stock radiator cooler. If I was going to do one I think that is what I would do. Just run a line from the radiator return line and run it up to your new cooler and then from there back to the tranny.

Get a generic oil cooler and plumb it before the radiator. You want the tranny fluid to warm up quickly, so plumbing it after the factory cooler in the radiator would be counter-productive. The system is under low pressure, so standard worm-gear clamps and oil rated hose works just fine. Just make sure it is before the factory cooler and is mounted properly (IE, rubber grommets, etc).


The Trans-Go reprogramming kit would work wonders for the longevity of that transmission.
