I have an 1990 Legacy wagon FWD that needs a new rear strut mount(tapered spring type). I didn't think that was going to be a problem. I checked several aftermarket sites, all carry front mounts, no rears. Does any one know why? I did find an oem mount on a subaru parts site. I kept searching here and found some folks saying that an '04 Sti mount would work if you filed out holes. Is this for AWD or Fwd. I've done a lot of searching and reading tonite and am still a little confused.

If someone can set me straight (or point me to a proper thread) on these mounts that would be great. I just want to find a source for a decent part that is ... of course, cheap. Thanks for the help.

I have a friend who put 04 sti stuts on his ss. He did have to modify the holes in the rear to get the top hats to work. I just used the stock ss rear top hat which worked fine when I did my 04 sti suspension. I'm sorry, but I have no idea how the all wheel drive stuff differs from the fwd.

I have continued to search and read and be confused, but perhaps I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

It has been said that the Sti '04 wrx rear strut mount will fit with '90 legacy with a little hole modification. Does this mean that any aftermarket mount for '04 wrx will fit the '90 legacy? Including the monroe mount for about $22.00? This brings me to another question. The stock mounts had a different left and right mount. For the '04 wrx I only see one mount that fits both sides. How does that work in the Legacy? I accidentally tried to put the left side onto the right and the angle was wrong. How would a universal left/right work?

I'm going to keep looking and perhaps I'll find the answers to these questions, but if someone knows the answers and wants to chime in that would be great.

I know people have modified the chassis holes to fit that era STi top mounts, but not sure about the angle difference.

The aftermarket mounts should work if you want to get one and try it out.

An update on the strut mount replacement. I ordered 2 Monroe mounts for '04 WRX Sti. Received them, and pulled the strut. Upon visual comparison, hat/spring angle was different. The mount had a nice thick isolator, but I wasn't sure if the rubber compression would be enough to compensate for the different angle. I'm not sure how the others who have used these mounts have dealt with the angle difference.

Anyway, I had to deliver mail with the vehicle the next day, and decided I didn't want to take the time to continue experimenting while having to drive 170 miles a day delivering mail.... so I bit the bullet and order Subaru mounts for the proper model year.

Also, even if the the angle thing might have worked out, these mounts were lower profile than the stock mounts and I would have lost 1/4"-3/8" of ride height and I don't want to lose any height, if anything I want to gain height if I can.

I was able to find a price of $69 each (delivered) for the mounts which isn't too bad, better than $120 at the local dealer(90 miles away). Although I opted to take the easy route and use Subaru mounts, I'm still curious about how some have used the wrx mounts on the MY90-91's and got them to work.
