Seems more humorous where rice is taken seriously by the owner/crowd. My GL wagon thankfully pre-dated the Age of Rice, so most people understood that the racing numbers and stripe were a joke (because the car was so slow and all my friends had muscle cars). Though the teeth in the grille, crosshairs on the hood, and hash marks on the door should have helped anyone along if they were unsure if it was a joke or not. Still, a couple of dumbasses did ask me if the car had really been in the 1984 Safari Rally.

I've heard them called krautburners before several times on bimmerforums, so yea saurkraut sounds right. Typically they just call it rice though.
But +1 on the humorous thing, if he did it because he thought it looked good or helped it would be different.

That's great, right on top of the vents; probably sucks the cooling air right out of the engine bay. Blown engine in 3...2...1...

Ricer (rice) in Germany = "Baumarkt Tuning"
Baumarkt is a Big Shop where you can buy lots of things for your home or garden, but here you can also buy something to tune your cars, like interieur oder lights and sometimes shitty spoilers xD, many Volkswagen or BMW driver buy there carparts there and then they meet each other @ Mc Donalds or BurgerKing and they are very cool *lol*
But keep cool, im driving an Audi A4 Avant as 2nd car
